Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hey everyone! Midas my 2 1/2 year old goldendoodle was grommed Friday, I love my groomer, she has always done a good job, she grooms from her home. I asked her to keep his butt short, she must have shaved his butt because his anus is red and looks irritated as well as an area in his inner thigh, I know he has a tendency to lick his inner thighs after he gets groomed and often causes a hot spot. last night I sprayed some gentaspray on his coulie, which was recommended by me vet once before when his anus was irritated. I noticed after I sprayed it that being that is somewhat raw the alcohol must have stung so I wiped his butt with a warm tissue, after that he went and hid in the back room under the table, this is not like Midas, he is ALWAYS with us, always around us, next to us. twice he did it, and I lured him next to me on the couch with a treat, and he went back under the table then I got him again and then he stayed. my friend that is a vet said that he was probably in some discomfort, but of course me I took it further (worry wart that I am) I was thinking omg is he sick why does he want to be alone, blah blah blah, anyways he is eating fine acting normal other then that incident, has this happened to anyone else? dog acting strange after a grooming? thanks In advance xoxo

No advice.  Maybe something topical that is numbing might help.

WHY does anyone take a blade to the bottom?   Seriously, would you?

Soft skin on the inner thigh with a hot blade? UGH.

I'm not a groomer but just last night I took a bandage scissors -they have blunt edges to the bottom to trim the hair. TRIM. Why does it ALL have to be removed?    Geesh.  Trim is fine.  If you want total hair removal just dip the dog in NAIR.   <-- No, dont do that. I was being sarcastic.

My dog might not look like a perfectly groomed dog but he at least gets groomed at home by ME!

I so agree Joanne, I don't understand all this shaving the butt thing. I trim around the area but who wants to see a butt like a baboon and how uncomfortable that must be. I did have to shave Riley's tummy hair quite short when I got back from Mexico but that is because he wasn't brushed through properly there while I was away and had matted up badly. I can see why you would take the coat right down if you had a dog that was swimming regularly but I do think some of these groomers are clipper happy. Scissors is what I use here. I'm a home groomer too so maybe not offering the right advice. This boy has a very sore bottom...:( I would wash gently with warm water and apply something soothing.

Sorry that Midas is feeling a bit out of sorts after his recent grooming.  Sounds to me like the blade was hot and he got a bit burned.  I agree with Joanne about no shaving in that area!  I groom Bailey at home and trim with scissors... only using the clippers on her back and sides.  Even then I have to keep checking to make sure the blade is not getting hot!   I am sure Midas just acted that way because the spray hurt and he wanted to remove himself from any chance of being touched.  Hope he is feeling better today!

If you have some over-the-counter cortisone cream (that you think he would not lick off), I'd put that on the irritated area. You could apply it right before you're heading out for a walk.  Poor buddy.

yea i am not sure why she shaved him there either..does anyone know what i can apply to the area? desitin? thanks everyone

See if your vet can sell you a bottle of Resi KetoChlor lotion.  It is very soothing and smells great.  Won't hurt him if he licks a bit off.  Great stuff!  I have used it on my dogs for years and it helps with any irritation spot.

Sorry to hear that Midas had a bad experience.  I have never heard of anyone shaving the butt either.  I can imagine that would cause some trauma!  Yikes.   I am very picky about grooming and always check them out after grooming.  If I ever find a scrape, I will be on the phone to my groomer asking what the hec happened!  I am wondering how Midas will react the next time you take him in for grooming.  Both of mine love our groomer so I know she is treating them well.  I would check with the vet to see what is the best soothing thing to put on him.  I hope he feels better soon.
