I've never owned a dog and I just heard of this term, but I was wondering what it is, why it's done, and how often it has to be done? thanks in advance

The anal glands are glands on each side of the rectum that provide lubrication each time the dog has a normal formed stool. They also give off a distinct scent that is unique to each dog, therefore, that's why all the butt sniffing. When a dog lifts its tail for another dog it is greeting, this too causes enough pressure to express this unique smell.  Some dogs may never need them manually expressed and some have issues.  If you notice soft, pudding like stools for a good amount of time, this could cause the glands to fill, and possibly bacteria build up.   Dogs will rub their butts across the floor, ( usually your best, lightest carpet). Or lick their butts more than normal..  This warrants a visit to the Vet for a manual, internal expression.  The groomer will do also, however, only externally express and this can sometimes not be efficient enough to get all out and can cause more problems. Be sure to ask the groomer NOT to express glands and have the  vet check when you go for routine visits or take to the Vet if you see a problem.  I have a 9 year old and soon to be 8 year old doodle and one has only had his expressed once by the Vet and the other has never had hers expressed.  But every dog is different and foods, stool consistency and frequency all play into it.  Hope that helps.

never having to had anal glands expressed is prof of optimal nutrition food sources being given to your dogs. If glands are having to be expressed I would suggest you look at the type of dog food being given. A good diet w balance of nutrients and fiber will keep those anal glands healthy.
