ok... I found it, but I can't figure out how to put the link on... search anal gland surgery and look for this:
DO NOT HAVE THE SURGERY!!!!! We have been dealing with this same thing with our doodle Remington for the past 2 years!!!! No it is not fun, but the risks to the surgery is not worth it! I have gone to 2 vets and both said they would NOT do the surgery unless it was the last resort!!!!
For the past 2 years we have had to had Remington's glands expressed every 4 weeks! Yes, its a pain, but we do it. Recently, our vet suggested something called an anal gland injection. They do this for dogs like Remington who have to have the glands expressed sooooo often. They would inject an antibotic into the glands. They told us that they have seen dogs go up to a year without having to have the expressions.
I think its ridiculous that your vet would suggest something like surgery first thing!!! Our vet said it is a VERY dirty and risky surgery because it is not done often. And they told us there is a risk of the dog being incontinent after. NOT WORTH IT for me! Yes, you might have the surgery and it be fine, but.. what if it isn't.
GOOD LUCK! After dealing with Remington's anal glands for the past 2 years... I know how frustrating it can all be.
