What is saddest about this is the following statement from the above article:

"The FDA has issued three different warnings to pet owners in the past five years about possible risks associated with the treats."

Yet, people continue to say that they had no idea about this.

Various pet blogs and pet food sites, including the Food Group here on DK, have been warning about treats and foods that contain ingredients from China for years, too. There has been a best-selling book published about this.

I wish that people would use some of their "media" time, whether it's on-line, listening to the TV or radio, or reading, to try to educate themselves about these things instead of just for entertainment and socializing. If only they would listen to, watch, or read the news once in awhile. It might save their dog's life.

I think it's sad that the FDA is aware of what's happening and yet takes no formal action.  I have taken to giving my guys only homemade and dehydrated treats.  At least I know what's in them and how old they are!  Thanks for all the time and effort you take in maintining all the latest info in DK, Karen.  You are wonderful!

Thank you, Donna.

The problem is that in order for the FDA to take action and force a company to remove products from shelves, thereby hitting them hard financially, they have to have proof of a clear connection between the product and the incidents of illness, death, etc. In these cases, they still don't know exactly what is causing the problem. And let's face it, dogs are not their priority. :-(

I'll add this to the FG Recall list, although I doubt any FG members are buying or giving Hartz Mountain treats of any kind.

The FG Recall list is always kept current as soon as we get any info on unsafe food products.

it makes me sad that this was the type of crap that I was giving to Cubbie before I found DK and got educated.  sigh

When Tacky got sick, I was feeding Solid Gold. IT was the treats that got us.  You don't think of them as much :(  If posts like this or the Food Group spares ONE dog (and their owner) the pain like I have suffered, it's worth it. People just don't know how bad the big dog food/treat companies are!  Still!

I was giving JD Dogswell Happy Hips jerky treats for years. I had verbal and written assurance from the company that even though the chicken/duck was imported from China, it was all tested here in the US before packaging. I trusted that...stupid, stupid me. Of course, now those products are on the list too.Thank God I stopped giving them to him about 18 months ago. I also think that his size worked in his favor, it seems that it is the smallest dogs who are the most susceptible to whatever this is.

We do the best we can, but it is important to try to stay a little bit informed.

Karen, I heard about many, many labs and goldens dying from those jerkys that Taquito had.  It's truly a miracle.  Sweet boy got down to 4 pounds.  That would be like a 120 pound person going down to 80.

I had not heard that, Allyson. I feel doubly lucky now.

Thanks Donna. I've said it before, I will say it again, my chihuahua should really be dead now from chicken treats - wow it's been almost 5 years since we went through all of this and poor boy has kidney disease now and likely won't live a long long life :(

Stay away from them, everyone!  Unless you know it's a reputable company (visit Food Group for more info), don't buy these.

Thanks for adding to recall list Karen!

I have learned so much from DK - especially about food!  Both my doodles were rehomes (Bender through DRC - love them!) and I had kept them on whatever they had been eating.  After reading all the posts here, I've slowly completely changed their entire diets to ony Blue Wilderness food and homemade treats.  Every once in a while they get a fresh marrow bone from the supermarket, but only on special occasions!

Thanks for reminding everyone with this discussion.
