I am going to my breeder's house tomorrow to meet Lyric, who will hopefully be my second doodle. I will be bringing my Mattie to meet Lyric, who is an 8 month old med. labradoodle, but an Australian, so she is a fluffball compared to my F1. I am so excited! I will keep everyone posted and post pics when i have them!
You are so right--they are both obedient sweet dogs, so there is alot of potential for a great friendship. It's worth the work. I will work on that Pack leader thing! I can do this! :)
My hubby has never had two dogs and always wants to quit when things get rough. I hope he sees some value in the double doodle life soon!
Haha, my husband said the same thing, his was the only "NO" vote to keep Jack. Now all three doggies are great friends AND my husband seems to like Jack the best. He roughhouses with him and I have to remind him all the time that he didn't want to keep Jack. Men...
Double dogs are the only way to go. I was a one dog gal my entire life, but since becomming a multiple dog household, I will never have just one again. They keep each other company, play with each other and look out for one another. You'll see...just be patient.
I've had them together for about an hour now and I have been more in charge of their play--and its a big improvement. I think this may work after all!
Thanks for all the help and advice--I love this website and all the wonderful and WISE people on it!
DAY 2!
Things are ALREADY so much better!! They just drank out of the water bowl together! My hubby has a way of eroding my confidence--he was the one who made me unsure. I got the pep talks from Doodle kisses and started referree-ing more and before I even went to bed it was better. Lyric listens really well, so that has helped alot. I have her leash and gentle leader on and I can get her under control quickly--Mattie really riles her up! After a few minutes, I make them quit. They are getting into the tug-of-war game now and last night they each had cow hooves and were actually able to lay down together with them--with my help!
Here she is! She is an australian labradoodle and we (the breeder and I) are hoping she passes all testing and can be bred.I'll try to get better pictures, but she keeps moving!
She is just beautiful!! I think they are like human kids (but what do I know, we are a 1 Doodle family), my 27 and 25 still fight over the shotgun seat and 'borrowing' each others clothes. Maybe they are just working out to see just how far they can push the other.
Keep up posted on the progress - maybe I will be able to talk DH into another.
Day 3 and we are really making progress! I was able to keep them from rough housing with voice commands alone today--Lyric is learning really fast. They were calm together in a room as I watched over them for almost a half hour--a new record! I didn't think it was possible just a day ago. That day it was more like World Wrestling Foundation--LIVE! I kept watch over them and kept reminding them to lay down, etc and they are listening so well. Of course, Mattie is a star at obedience, so that makes it so much easier. if I say "sit", she hits the ground at 90 mph! It won't take long for Lyric to get the idea. She already has much better manners. Thanks again to all my DK friends and their words of advice and encouragement.
It has been three weeks of double doodles and all or you who replied to my concerns were RIGHT! The dogs are doing fine now--they are self-policing--after two weeks of giving them just a bit of time to play before it got too rough and separating them most of the time, they have now learned how to play and how to rest together. The level of craziness has come way down and they are much more mellow with each other. I am so glad I hung in there and let them get used to each other. They are now the best of friends. The new doodle, Lyric, likes to guard things, but they never growl at each other, she just plays "keep away" and Mattie tries to snatch back whatever Lyric has--and often succeeds. No aggression though,so I am pleased they have learned to play without too much rough housing and seem compatible.
