I know - there are many discussions regarding this and many of them say to double the weight at 4 months and add 10 Lbs. However, many people state that isn't so. Whatever our puppy winds up at is fine - I just would like to know at approximately how many months will they grow to that last inch (since weight can be controlled with food - I just want to know when he'll stop growing), At this point Bailey is 13 inches at 4 1/2 months.
That is hard to say. Is Bailey a mini or a standard? I am no expert by any means, but I do think the minis cap out a little earlier than the standards. Peri has been about the same weight since she turned 8 months old (she is 10 1/2 months old now). I also think her height has maxed out for now (about 15 1/2 at withers). But she is a mini....
I would assume Bailey has a lot of growing left!! I would also check out the discussion in Puppy Madness Group about Height/Weight updates. We all post growth patterns with cooresponding ages - you could see if there is anyone similar to bailey. Let me put the link in for you.
Dogs continue to gain weight in the form of muscle mass even after they have stopped skeletal growth. A dog may reach his full height before he is a year old, but continue to gain lean weight for another year. So there is really no correlation between "that last inch" and the final adult weight.
Standards are usually at their full skeletal size by 10 months. Smaller dogs reach adult height earlier, sometimes as early as 6 months. Normal adult weight may not stabilize for a standard until 2 years of age.
Exactly...Peri will probably gain a few more pounds as she "fills out" over the next few months to even a year. Vet thinks she will end up around 30 pounds, but her height and length will remain the same.
I thought Rouser was done growing (taller) at around 12 months. However, at around 18 months, my husband and I started noticing that he looked taller so we measured him and, sure enough, he had put on another inch at the withers in those six months.
Between 12 months and 18 months, he continued to grow around as well. I guess you would call it filling out. His chest dropped - it really expanded a ton. He remained slender with a poodle form and has been adding muscle around his hind legs and shoulders. He is now 21 months and he has been putting on about 1 pound per month since he was 12 months old. Last week, he weighed in at 85.5 pounds and the vet said he is still very trim and is exactly on track.
I would say that he looks like a much more solid dog in the last 3 months. Previously, he looked really lanky (really long legs and his hips looked like they were detached from the rest of his body because he was so long) and now he is starting (just starting) to look like a more fully formed dog.
Now, he is a large (tall) dog, even for a standard poodle but I know a lot of doodles that weigh 15 pounds more than he does. I think he matured more slowly than other dogs but I think he'll stay under 90 pounds.
