Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Looking for any suggestions/opinions. I have begun research on the 3 types of dogs and am having a hard time deciding what's best for my family. Anyone have any comments on which type is better? Thanks!

It really depends on what type of personality you are looking for. Australian Labradoodles will be somewhat similar to each other, while a Wheaten Terrier will be pretty different. Although Wheatens are somewhat less.... (okay I'll just say it) neurotic than most terriers, they are still terriers. You can expect high energy, somewhat difficult to train, and overall more high strung than the other two options.

It seems from the breeds you are mentioning that you want a low shedding dog. I would say an Australian Labradoodle would be better than a Goldendoodle in that regard. they are somewhat more reliable when it comes to being non-shedding, but absolutely no guarantees there that you will have a non-shedding dog.

With the doodles you mean, there are no guarantees. With a Wheaten, you are at least absolutely guaranteed of non-shedding, as well as predictable size.

Yes, that is what I mean. I should have clarified that.

Thanks to all for advice! Kids ages 9 and 11- medium sized yard, half fenced, but would be open to electric fence. No other pets except for a caged Guinnea Pig :) Looking for a soft, fluffy, even keeled dog, easy going temperment, kid and people friendly of course!

In answer to your question, yes, I do plan on formal training. And I am a stay at home Mom, so the dog will not need to be crated for any lengthy amount of time.

I don't know much about wheatens but how much time/money are you willing to spend on maintaining a doodle's coat?  If they aren't heavy shedders, you will need to spend a fair amount of time and money to keep a doodle's coat looking good and mat free.

Just as much maintenance with a Wheaten's coat, the only advantage to a doodle or poodle is that they aren't as prone to ear problems.

It is funny. I think Rutland Manor bred in soft coated Irish Wheaten Terriers towards the end to help with ear infections.

I said that wrong. I meant that Wheatens don't have the ear issues that doodles and poodles have, but it came out backwards. :)

Willing to spend time and money on the coat! Thanks all for the replies-

What made you consider those 3 breeds?

Have a friend w a Wheaten, cute as can be! Also have a friend w an Australian Labradoodle and she swears by them! The mix of the doodles I hear are great dogs, low ot no shed and intelligent, stemming for the poodle- desirable traits for me. I like the non to low shed, allergy free- I like the soft coat, wavy type fur. And the differnet sizes that the doodles come in-
