Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Here is a picture of my baby "Lucy". The first one is at 12 weeks.

I was told that she was a F1 (Dad a white standard poodle/ Mom a golden). Because of her chalk color, I have determined that she is not a full golden (as I was beginning to suspect). However... wondering if she is a goldendoodle + poodle mix which would make her 75% golden and 25% poodle... hence the flat, smooth coat and beardless face. Perhaps the poodle that was bred with the golden didn't produce puppies, but another goldendoodle (without the breeders knowledge) on the property was the actual father. There were 12 puppies in the litter and all of them look like Lucy... no beard...smooth coat.
I have read (and would agree) that a 50-50 mix would never produce a beardless face. I have a labradoodle and totally understand that there is no way to predict how curly the puppy will be, understand all the coat changes & understand that there are simply differences in coats.
I am having a huge struggle right now: Lucy does not seem to be who she was represented to be. Every time I look at her I think about how she isn't what I had wanted for over a year. On the other hand... I love her. BUT... because I *do* love her, I want her to be in the best possible place with someone who will look at her and not think any negative thoughts! My window of time on this is short as my labradoodle loves her, I love her, etc. She is precious, but looks like a golden not a goldendoodle.
Someone with knowledge please give me advice. Is there a chance for her to become more fluffy... particularly in the face. Also, please don't judge me for thinking about giving her to someone else. I am a loyal and loving dog-mother. This is why my heart is breaking over this issue. I need encouragement, not judgment here... help!

It's not true that a 50/50 golden/poodle mix would never produce a beardless face. The gene for the facial hair on all doodles comes from the poodle. Poodles do in fact have beards- BIG beards- but many people shave their faces, always on show dogs. An F1B would be almost certain to have a lot of facial hair. On the other hand, there are lots of retrieverish looking F1s (50-50 crosses). Golden retrievers (and Lasbrador retrievers) do not have beards.
Yeah... but do you think a 50-50 mix could produce 12 dogs in the litter who are ALL beardless and all non-curly smooth coats? All the puppies look just like mine... beardless and smooth. They all look just like golden puppies! The only clue I have that they are not straight-up goldens is the chalky color.
I'm not claiming to be any kind of expert and am not arguing with you. I am simply trying to understand about my puppy. I am also working through all the emotions I am having.

P.S. I did join the "wheres the doodle" group...thanks
I know that goldens do not have beards. i know that poodles do have beards. It is the aforementioned facts (plus the fact that all 12 pups are beardless) that lead me to the conclusion that my puppy is not 50-50 but goldendoodle dad + golden mom.
I understand. I was thinking you thought she was 75% poodle.
Did you see photos of any of this breeder's previous litters, along with photos of the pups as adults? I don't know when the facial hair really begins to come in, I do know that even the fluffiest, doodliest looking are not born with beards.
I know I am stupid... this is their first goldendoodle litter. They are golden breeders. The mother and grandmother were on the property. They told me that they had bred the mom golden with a neighbor's white poodle. She also mentioned that the neighbors were goldendoodle breeders so I was wondering if a goldendoodle "jumped the fence' so to speak. Maybe the white poodle did not impregnate the mom?Maybe it was one of their goldendoodles. See what I am thinking? A goldendoodle dad + a golden mom could produce 12 smooth coated, beardless pups.
This is what happens because I am too poor to afford the $1500 puppies. My labradoodle was only $400 and she is the most awesome dog in the entire world!!!! I just wanted a companion for her! So, I had to gamble with a breeder who does not charge as much. Sucks for me... though not what I wanted, Lucy is still awesome!
Well...that detail about all 12 looking like retrievers puts a new perspective on things...
You may want to look at the doodles in the Where's The Poodle In My Doodle? Group. These are all 50-50 crosses and look more like retrievers.

So I really don't think your puppy was misrepresented to you. I am sure she is an F1. Mixed breed dogs are unpredictable.
As to your giving her to someone else, if you purchased her from a reputable breeder, you have a clause in your purchase contract that obligates you to return her to her breeder. If you didn't, please contact the Doodle Rescue Collective or IDOG, both nationwide doodle rescue & rehomes groups, to find the best home for your puppy.
Golden retrievers DO come in 'white' (typically these are what are referred to as "English golden retrievers" and are from show lines vs. field lines). So the mom very well could have been a full golden despite her color. At least her color is NO reason to suspect anything.

I'm unclear as to your other suspicions on your dog's mix. You said you think she is a goldendoodle + poodle mix...are you referring to the mom or your pup--in either case...that would LOWER the chance your pup is 75% golden.

Regardless of any of the above, though...an F1 can indeed look VERY retriever-like. IT does happen. Got more photos of your pup now? How old is it now?
The golden mom and grandmother were on the property. They are not English golden retrievers. Both of them are very reddish in color and definitely American. But, I am familiar with the English goldens and think they are awesome.
Gavin looked very retriever-like as a pup, but got doodly as he got older.
Gavin at 14 weeks

Gavin at 11 months (with a summer cut)

Gavin is adorable! Look at Lucy's picture....it just seems there's no way she could look like Gavin does at 14 weeks. If she had his look, I would not be at all concerned!
Gavin you are one handsome dood, and I am glad you are also feeling better.
If all the pups are like her - I would say they are Golden Retrievers! Almost all English Golden Retievers are light in colour (I LOVE the dark ones - there are so few of them here!!!) and she looks exactly like the average Goldie pup that you get in the UK.

I would very much doubt that she would ever look 'doodly'. So if that is what you want - you may have to take her back???? 15 years is a long time to live with a dog you don't really want.... sounds harsh but it's true!

But - if you love her whatever her looks - and don't mind the shedding hair of a Goldie then keep her.
