I'm just wondering if this calls for a little panic, or a whole lot of over the top rush to the vet panic.

Sophie was really rambunctious and running around jumping off the furniture and what not. Worried about my neighbour in the apartment below me knocking on the door I put her in the crate to settle down a bit. She was pretty annoyed that she was in her crate and started banging on the door to be let out. I ignored her because that is not how I want her to think she cana get my attention.

There was a little hard plastic bowl in her crate from this morning (I sometimes give her a little bit of yogurt and some cranberry powder mixed in).  Anyway, I was sitting at my comptuer and heard 'crunch crunch crunch'. I jumped up and went to investigate and found this:

I tried to fit all the pieces back into place but there are pieces missing that are now presumably in Sophie's tummy. The plastic is hard and jagged.

So how much should I be panicking right now??? Because I'm really scared that this will cause damage. What do I do???

Sherri, I personally would take her to the ER. Don't panic, but I would take the bowl and the pieces along.

I knew you'd say that Karen! lol. and i was so close too. But a little rational voice told me to call first and see what they say. I thought for sure they'd say rush her in. Now that I think of it, the pieces really were so small.

I'm such a basket case!

Yikes!

I am not one to run to the Vet, I take the wait and watch approach most times. Unless the pieces are huge that are missing I would go with that. You say the bowl is little (looks big here) if it's small like the size of a yogurt cup the pieces have to be small right? Nothing really big enough except to pass? I mean chances are they were broken.

Maybe someone else who is less than an alarmist (you) and someone more reasonable (F) may have some answers for you I guess I am somewhere in the middle.

Good luck!

Thanks Lisa!

You need to do what feels right for YOU!  If Rooney did this - at 22 lbs - off to the vet we would go.  Stuart at 73 lbs - I'd be watching him closely.  There is no right answer except what is right for you.  Let us know o.k and we are saying a prayer for good things.

Thank you Jane! At 40lbs it's a bit of a gamble, but if she can eat sticks, I'm sure this will be fine. I'll keep a close eye on her through the night.

She may have crunched them up into small pieces before she swallowed. I don't recall you mentioning that she normally eats things likes socks, etc. so they could be small enough to pass. Had she eaten recently? Perhaps giving  her  some bread or something similar might encase them and buffer any sharp edges.

you were right about the bread. Thanks Ricki!

I called the emergency clinic. She said that they wouldn't make her vomit as it could do more harm than good. They actually suggested I feed her a vasseline sandwich. Literally spread vaseline as think as I can get it on a piece of bread and get her to eat it. This will coat everything. I'm pretty sure this will upset her tummy but I think I should do it anyway. the faster I can get those pieces out of her the better.

This might put the size of the bowl in perspective:

they said to keep an eye on her for any vomitting difficulty pooping or for blood in her stool, or abnormal behaviour. As long as she is herself she should be fine.

She never does this. She never eats anything. I think she swallowed some pieces out of defiance when she saw me running towards her screeching. I think she thinks I'm mad at her and she's sulking.

So glad you called the vet and they had a suggestion! Whew. Hoping this all passes easily!

Glad you called the emergency clinic. It sounds like a good plan and nice to hear that they didn't panic! LOL

Sophie you little stinker!!
