Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My goldendoddle Phoenix seems to have a sensitve stomach and his bowel is mostly soft.  Right now we have been feeding him Orijen which is rank pretty high on the list.

Does anyone have other suggestions of some great puppy food choices?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR PUP IS HAVING ISSUES. I GOT MY ADVICE ON THE FOOD GROUP. MAYBE IT'S A SMALL PHASE? CHANGING FOOD IS ALSO A POSSIBILTY FOR MORE ISSUES?? GOOD LUCK
Pure pumpkin from a can will help with that too--mix a spoonful in with the food--make sure it doesn't have pie spice in it.
For two and a half weeks on Orijen Riley had soft poops but I just hung on in and now he is absolutely normal.  I don't give him any treats except a 'Deer Hoof' (gross but he loves it) and some small pieces of chicken I use for training.  How long have you been feeding the Orijen as it can take some weeks to adjust properly to.
I feed Fromm to both my dogs and they love it and have no trouble!

There is no best food for "goldendoodles" - only a best food (or food combination) for your dog.

We feed Luna Blue Buffalo (chicken & brown rice) - one of the less expensive "recommended" brands (it is not grain-free) and Luna absolutely LOVES it.  She tries to dive into the big food container when I go to get her daily ration.  However - several people on the food group have said that their dogs won't eat the "lifesource bits" so it's not for everyone.

This brings up a few interesting poop-related questions I've been wondering about the difference in the recommended foods:

- Do the grain-free foods make poops smaller? (I would think less fiber means less volume left over at the end)

- Blue is corn/wheat/soy free, and since we switched Luna over her poops have been much more firm.  Does this indicate she may have a mild corn or wheat allergy? Or maybe just a sensitivity to something in Eukanuba? (There are so many potential culprits...)

Soft poops are not indicative of an allergy. It can be indicative of a food sensitivity, but I doubt Luna has an allergy to something in Eukanuba. It just isn't a very good food, and when you switched to a better one without a lot of filler, you saw an improvement. Grain-free food does usually reduce the stool volume as well as making the stool firmer for most dogs.

You are right that there is no "best food for goldendoodles". There are foods that work for some dogs and not for others, but it has nothing to do with their breed or breed-mix. That's another gimmick some of the lower quality food companies have come up with.

Good luck finding something that works.  As we were trying to find the right mix for Rua, I had to create a poo scale so I could get a report from my DH.  The scale started at 1 (diarrhea), 2 (pudding), 3 (formed but pudding), 4 (formed but soft), 5 (solid waste).  So, after every poo, I had to get a rating.  We did add pumpkin, but that still didn't firm her up enough.  It was suggested we feed her a combo of Orijen Puppy and Acana and that did the trick.  We'll be switching her over to regular food once she gets to the end of this last batch.
