Well, in exactly two weeks, our little family of three will be moving into our first home! We keep telling Albee what this means for him, and clearly he has no idea that apartment life is about to end.

I've done a little bit of research, but there are only so many poop discussions one can read until needing to ask the question to all of you poop-picker-upper-pros..

I'm the type that likes a plan, and I often over think things.. But I am wanting to know how you all handle the yard cleanup of dog poo?

Here's my potential dilemma- I would prefer to keep a clean yard. I like to walk around barefoot and would really like to avoid the small brown mines in the backyard. But I imagine that if you're picking up poop daily, your garage/trash cans would begin to stink, right?

I also am environmental conscience and would like a practical, low budget way to handle this chore.

So share your routines with me! I would like to have something put in place from the start!

Thanks!

When I got my puppy my boyfriend insisted that I clean up poop as I see it, meaning each times she poops. Yeah...that isn't working out so well. I was going out with two grocery store plastic bags-one to wrap around my hand and pick up, one to deposit. That worked just fine. I tied it really tight so the smell is trapped and our garbage can isn't stinky.

My boyfriend got me tongs with big rubber ends for me to pick up dog poop with. That way it stays far away from my hands and it is easy to hose off. A friend of ours uses it and that's where he got the idea. I haven't tried it yet but I think it sounds like a good idea. I pretty much know Crush's poop schedule so it's not hard for me if I want to pick it up as she goes. I haven't stepped in poop but my boyfriend did twice and he was not a happy camper.

The tongs are a good idea!

Good to know that a tight bag will lock the scent. I thought about keeping a bag somewhere outside, but I noticed my sister-in-law does something similar-- but then it's stinky if you're in that area of the lawn.

I'll be curious to see how his schedule changes. Right now, we're with him for every bathroom break- we'll see if he goes more or less when he has freedom outside.

LOL...Enzo must have extra toxic poop! It doesn't matter how tight I tie bags, the smell permeates the bag. Our garage was getting pretty bad, which is why I switched to the outdoor trash can.
We spend many, many hours in our backyard. I too, am barefoot often. I clean up after each and every poop and use bio- degradable bags. They go into a small trash can that is placed in an out of the way area.( out of the whiff zone). The garbage can then gets dumped into the larger garbage cans on trash day.

This sounds like a good plan too- maybe I can dress up a cute garbage can near our future garden for outdoor scraps and poo :) Of course the key is to remember to empty it ;)

Same type of plan as Ro - pickup poop as it's deposited, as much as possible, then into plastic bags into a trash can that's out of sight and smell in the yard, then into the main trash on trash days.  Works fine.

I have a plastic grocery bag in each hand. I just stick my hand in a plastic grocery bag and pick it up and toss into the next bag.

Easy. I dont use a pooper scooper or any of that. You just have to clean that tool off. Ehh.

When you feed good food, the poop is nice and hard. No big deal.

As for environmental issues, many here bought a device on DK a few years ago where they place it right into the septic.

Congratulations on your new home

I might have to look into that..

We mostly use reusable grocery bags, so I don't often find myself having spare plastic bags on hand - although maybe that will change when we move in.

And thanks! I am practically counting down the hours- we're beyond excited! And I plan on posting more pictures then of Albs - right now the pics contain an overcrowded apartment :)

I've always avoided plastic grocery store bags like the plague. Our roommate brings them home enough for me to use them for poop duty.

The device that goes on the sewer line is called "Doggie Doo Drain Dog Waste Sewer Line Attachment" and can be found on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0020N940C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encod...

Thanks for posting this, such a great idea!

More likely into the town sewage. I would not add more waste to my septic.
