St. Paddy's is coming right up and as usual I'll be making corned beef with cabbage, red potoates and carrots. Yummy if I do say and I'll be having guests as well. It ocurred to me that now that I know Nicky - my first really Irish friend - that perhaps I should also make an authentic Irish dessert. I have no clue what that might be. I'm actually a better baker than I am a cook so this might be fun. So - I'm asking Nicky to enlighten me on Irish desserts - I'm guessing Baileys Irish Cream doesnt' qualify - lol. Or any others of you of Irish decent - what is your favorite Irish dessert receipe?

This is making my mouth water!
Yum.....we loved Kinsale. They make their own beer locally, and it's amazing.
Just wanted to say that when I check in here I automatically scroll down the right hand side to see what new discussions are there.,..I got a heck of a surprise to see our names and a call out. In a flash I thought 'What am I an expert in"?The Irish Fashion Scene? The best places to eat and go out in Ireland. How to cook the perfect Beef Wellington. How to get a good nights sleep beside a man who snores (this involves ear plugs and an iPhone) How to have a rip roaring time when out with my girl friends. How to find a parking space when it seems there aren't any....the list goes on,. Of course I wasn't expecting to be called on for St Patrick's Day recipes. There is one last thing that I think I can confidently add to the list above, I am an expert in making wonderful friends here on DK.
Nicky, you're also an expert in being a wonderful friend on DK! *^_^*
Yup. I suspect you are our only Irish, Jewish friend too. I would bet we have most religions covered, and tons of ethnic groups too.
I know I'm an absolute rarity....now if you asked me for a recipe for Geffilte fish or Kneidlach or Chopped Liver...no problem.
A little Jewish Joke I like
Two Jewish women sitting in a restaurant. The waiter goes up to them and asks "Is anything alright"?
Great! Now who in their right mind still makes some of these things. My mother liked to talk of her mother having fish swimming in the bath tub for gefilte fish but I never actually saw this.
F. I do, but not often I might add. About once or twice a year I get nostalgic and take out my Mothers cookery book. I do regularly make chicken soup and chopped liver though. The gefilte fish has to be fried in the garden as it stinks out the house!
I believe they used to use Carp for Gefilte. We now have lots of Lithuanian people living here in Ireland (they came when it was booming) and they have their own food stores. I could now buy carp (if I wished) but I do buy their great Rye breads and sour cream and cheeses which my grandmother used to make. It's amazing how certain food can evoke very strong memories.
I make chicken soup too but my version. Fried gefilte fish, never heard of that, the kind I know is boiled.
Yes, foods do evoke memories. I still would love to find the recipe for a cake, with sour cream dough, topped with peaches or other summer fruit, that my aunts made.
We always boil some and fry some dipped in Matzo meal in a deep fat fryer. I think I remember a similar cake. I must take a look through some of the old books one of these days.
I agree!!
Nicky, when I think Irish I think of you. You are my real connection to a place that has stolen my heart.
