Can I go without cutting my doodle?

Crush has a long, pretty fleece coat. I've seen pictures of doodles with nice long hair and I want to keep it that way. She does shed a tiny bit which is probably a good thing, grooming wise? I know I'll need to cut the hair away from her eyes, and I've trimmed the hair under her feet so it doesn't mat. I brush her hair every few days because I want to keep it long and I DO NOT want it to mat. I've seen some animal cops episodes with bloody matted fur and that terrifies me. (I obviously wouldn't let it get like that). Anyway, does anybody here not cut their doodle's hair?

Breanna, I agree with you that long haired doodles are just gorgeous. It all comes down to the type of coat and the amount of time that takes to maintain, (mat-free specially). Some dogs do tend to get a very broad and thick body look with their longer coats and others just flow in the breeze, light and airy. I have two that look 10 pds heavier when longer than 2-3 inches and it would take a LOT of combing every day to even hope to keep them mat free. So they are cut short at least twice a year.
As far as it being necessary to cut her short for hotter weather, it is recommended by specialists, that the longer hair acts as an insulation to protect them from the sun and overheating and sunburn as well. Kind of like attic insulation, the coat helps them maintain their regular body temps better. So grow as long as you want and are able to maintain. She will love all the special time with you getting combed every day too. Lots of training can go on during that time to help exercise their minds too.

She gets lots of treats during brushing because she did not like it at first. Teeth brushing is still nearly impossible!
