Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi again, here is an update to coat question.  Charlie started out at 8 weeks in first picture, then 10ish weeks, now 15 weeks.  His coat has changed dramatically in this short time.  Starting out very brown with a bit of white on his face.  The white started to take over the rest of his body.  He also started to get more coarse hair and less fluffy.  He hasn't shed much of all.  A few dust bunnies here and there.  That being said, he seemed to have a bit of an under coat.  I used a "Furminator" today and this trimmed his coat down a bit on the back as quite a bit of fluff came off.  I didn't use on his head or legs/feet.  His body is mostly dark again but the top of his head is still very soft and wispy.

My question is this typical of a labradoodle of 15 weeks to change a coat so fast?  Will it change more?  He seems to have more of a "hair coat" but is there a chance it will change to more fleece type?  He is such a cool dog with a very funny personality, but also very loving.

All doodles go through a coat change, which normally occurs before they are a year old (or around that time).  Many of the chocolate doodle coats will fade and that is what you are seeing.  You are also see the coat change from the soft puppy coat to the adult coat which is many times more coarse.  I would not use a furminator on a doodle though.  It would be extremely rare for a doodle to have an undercoat.  Looking at the pics though I'm really surprised you aren't seeing more shedding.  You are lucky.

Doodles can really change color as they mature! A blonde pup I have became red and my other doodle was red and is not almost white! So, have fun with the changes! This is pretty unusual --and I suspect it is a red sable--something you see in poodles--they change totally from a red at birth to a light tan with red on the ears.

He certainly is beautiful.  I wouldn't use a Furminator on him as they are designed for dogs with undercoats.  Your pup might have an undercoat, but until you know that for sure, it isn't a good idea.  I think dogs with more exotic coloring do the most changing.  It is going to be a fun ride watching the changes.

Ditto to what others have said.  Your Charlie has a wonderful soulful face.  Our Charlie did also and he was like a little ole man the day he came home with us.  He is 7 now and still has that look and demeanor. Enjoy your beautiful boy..
