I saw the earlier discussion on coat types, and I have no idea what any of them mean! Wiry, fleece, wool, soft, absolutely no idea. My breeder says Madden will have a long soft coat. A random person said she will have a wiry, straight to low wave coat. Of course she does not know my dogs parents so that was just her guess. Even still, I dont get the lingo... and I have no idea what to expect when she grows up! So if you get what this means I would love to hear it!
Knowing the parents doesn't matter much when it comes to predicting coat type in an early generation goldendoodle. Is yours an F1 or an F1b? Either way, I think we can rule out wool as wool is a pretty tight curl...think sheep's wool..sort of. And she looks pretty soft but she is still young...so impossible to know just yet exactly what she'll look like. Fleece can be curly or wavy and is super silky and soft so I hear. Though she may not necessarily be fleece either---there are some good gems of info in our Grooming Group.
Ya I have no idea what I would classify her coat as... she is a F1 by the way. I looked at grooming, but I'll look again, I probably just didnt look hard enough. Thanks Adina!
The coat will definitely change as she gets older. Heres our puppy at 8 weeks old. He had a THICK wavy fleecy coat and now he is almost 9 mths old and it is so thick, wavy in parts but curls if his hair is long which it is now. He gets groomed tomorrow which is a good thing because he is getting a few matts-mostly on his ears and around his neck where his collar is. Unfortunately he chewed on the camera connection wire to our computer or I would post more recent phot's. Your pup appears to have a striaght to low wave coat right now-but this could change as she grows. Whatever it becomes, she is very cute!!
Your puppy is too cute! But ya I've been looking around for doodles who look like mine but I cant seem to find one... I'm just curious what her hair might look like when shes old. When you say straight does that mean it will lie flat like a golden retriever? Or it just wont be very kinky?
Oh and thank you for the compliment! She is definitely the best thing that ever happened to me. I almost want to get another doodle in like a year so I can experience it all over again! And so my Madden can have a friend haha
Look at the pic again of our guy-his hair at the front was pretty wavy and really thick but the back of him and his tail was much straighter. It was like he was 1/2 and 1/2. Well today at nine mths old-his hair is thick, wavy, all over, and if we let it get long curly-not as curly as a poodle though. I have seen doodle pups that look exactly like a Golden Reriever when they are young and as they get older and their adult hair comes in, it gets all wavy and curly. You take what you get with this breed. BTW-we want another doodle also-they are addictive!!
Sadie has that type of coat as well. She gets curls around her tail and at her ears, the rest is soft and wavy. Non-shedding. We are having a heck of a time keeping mats out from under and just along the edge of the soft portion of her ears! It's all of a sudden a problem!
We are having the same problem with the matts on the ears! Thomas got groomed today and they cut them all ot and his ears are now shorter-but we wanted them to be shorter-he looks great-not too short-he has the teddy bear cut which we love. His matts just started also about two weeks ago. He will be nine months old tomorrow. I would post a pic but the litlle, huge beast chewed my connection cord and I havn't had time to replace it. Why can't he just chew shoes like normal dogs???
Ok my guess would be a straight fleece. She may even end up to be a slight shedder. She looks very much like a golden retriever. But not all straight coated dogs shed. Adrianne's Samantha is Labradoodle with a straight coat and she doesnt shed. I am in no means an expert; my coat guesses are made by past observations and looking at members pages puppy vs adult coats and what they say about shedding vs non.
Do you by chance have a picture of what straight fleece looks like as an adult? When I hear straight I keep picturing a golden retriever, or is that what it is?
