Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello Midas is almost 2 year old goldendoodle. Last Sunday we took him for the first time to this indoor dog park. He played for about a half hour and then some dogs weren't so nice so we left. Then we went to the outdoor dog park we always go to and played there for a while. He was fine all week. Then yesterday morning I drove him to the groomers and as soon as he got out of the car he got very excited, pulled a little (always does) no more then usual. And I started to hear a coughing hacking sort of noise. Not sure if I'm describing it well. Then he calmed down and it stopped, then the groomer came out and he got excited again and it started happening again, then he calmed down and it stopped. He came home from groomer was perfect. Then my friend came over later on and he got excited and it happened again, and then again when I came in later that night and when my husband came in and then it stopped. He is eating and acting normal playing running normal stuff. So last night was fine and we went to bed, this morning about 6/7 I woke up to him doing it again. He wasn't excite because he was just waking up.. It went on for about a minute. He has done it a few more times this morning. I'm wondering if he really could have gotten kennel cough that quick at the dog park, and he is up to date on shots I heard it doesn't prevent only lessens the risk of getting kennel cough. I'm also concerned about it being tracheal collapse, I don't know how to tell the difference. I'm worried because my husband left to plow snow and the roads are getting bad by m, I'm not sure I can get him to the vet today. Any advice experiences or maybe what it sounds like? anything would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

So you do get a kennel cough shot or nasal spray?  Yes, you could. My guess, he pulls on his collar.

Were you aware of the damage that can be caused by collars on a dogs throat?

He could have injured many areas in the throat. He most likely is okay, but do note that series injuries can occur with a dog that likes to pull

Condition Overview

Choke chain injuries, tight slip collars, or any rope around the neck can fracture the hyoid bone and/or cause compression damage to the nerves of the pharynx and larynx (throat).

Symptoms

Dogs with laryngeal injuries often breathe normally at rest but show respiratory distress during exertion.

Laryngeal Trauma

Choke chain injuries, tight slip collars, or any rope around the neck can fracture the hyoid bone and/or cause compression damage to the nerves of the pharynx and larynx. Other causes of trauma to the larynx include bite wounds and sharp foreign objects such as bones and pins that penetrate the larynx. Dogs with laryngeal injuries often breathe normally at rest but show respiratory distress during exertion.

Here is an article that talks about all kinds of reasons and might be a good one to read

I worry about this a lot since my dog also pulls when excited sometimes.  I use a harness or a pinch collar to prevent any pulling.

Hope he feels better soon.

Just watch his temperature or any worsening in symptoms.

Is a pinch collar a prong collar?
Just Googled it, that is what I use and he still pulls a little.
Also just called the vet. He last had it done intranasal and it was jan 11th, he is due back for it jan 3rd of this year
I mean 2014

Here's some pretty good information regarding kennel cough.  Bear in mind that this is a holistic Vet so she does talk about natural remedies....some of which I personally take with a "grain of salt".

Where can I find that info?

Sorry I forgot the link.  Here it is.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA-l0y6if1g

Maybe he has some small fiber stuck in there that tickles on a deep breath.

Baker had kennel cough, I think he picked it up at the groomer, even after receiving the vaccine.  Kennel cough sounds like the dog has something stuck in his throat that he's trying to get rid of…he would cough, strain like he was trying to eject something, then sometimes he would gag & spit up a clear liquid, kind of bubbly.  If it's kennel cough, Midas will need antibiotics.  Let us know what you find out :)

Here is a video of Quincy.  He had the vaccination, so it was a "mild" case that responded to cough medicine and antibiotics.

Hope your doodle is better soon!
