We had the first deep, wet snow yesterday (fall in Montana--you get used to it), and Chervil got covered in icy snow balls on her legs, tummy, rear. I don't mind the wet or anything, but we were out walking on a long trail, and she was sooo uncomfortable. I tried to pull them off, but that didn't work very well--and then they took forever to melt off once we were home. Does anyone have any neat tricks for how to handle this (besides being glad she's getting a better workout, since she's packing around an additional 10 pounds of snow and ice!)?
Besides all the suggestions that have been made, all I can add is run some warm water over the legs. That requires putting her in the tub. Not a great suggestion but some do it.
My golden retriever used to get these when we would go to Lake Tahoe in the winter. We called them aliens!!! I put her in the bathtub with warm water and they melted off. It hurts to pull them off and I'm sure it hurts for them to bite them off.
Good luck
Would a blow dryer help? I think the hot air would melt the snow faster and also warm and dry the dog at the same time. I haven't ever tried it, but it was just an idea for a suggestion.
Thanks everyone! I loved the picture, Sue!! That's exactly what she looks like! It's snowing again today, so I'll try out some of these great ideas--thank you all. We've just refitted the tub with a sprayer thingie that might work to melt some of the big ones after we get home. That, and a warm kitchen, and she should thaw just fine. She loves the snow so much it's worth it. And soon, it will get colder (oh yay--Florida, here I come) and the snow will become drier, so not so much of a problem.
Linda I am in Florida, and it is 95 degrees here today, it is hot, and humid, and for some reason it should be getting cooler, but it is not!!!!....Hopefully this heat will go away soon...Warm is one thing but this is too warm...BUT so far we have not had any Hurricanes, and if it means that the weird weather is keeping them away, I will take that anyday, lol...Where in Florida are you coming to?...I am on the east coast, Lake Worth, not far from West Plam Bch area..
Oh dear! Kidding about coming to Florida, although I wish I weren't. The winters get harder and harder the older I get. I worried about getting a puppy in winter (I got Chervil last February), but she's just the ticket: so loves the cold and snow she makes me laugh and (sort of) enjoy it, too. I don't envy hurricanes, but a predicted low of 4 degrees Saturday night seems excessive. Who do I talk to about changing the weather????
