I took Crush in at 8:30 this morning to be spayed. I picked her up at 4:00 and the vet came out and said she was nauseous and wanted to give her an injection to keep her from vomiting. I let her give it to her and took her home. She has two different pain medications which should have been given to her tonight at dinner time. I didn't ask what to do if she wouldn't eat. I added pumpkin to her food which I thought might entice her but it didn't. I don't think I should give her the pain medications without food but I don't want her in pain, either. What to do?

NEW QUESTION:

I was told not to let her jump on and off the bed for three days. I don't know how the heck I am supposed to monitor this but it's not working. I try to stay around her and predict when she's ready to jump so I can lift her, but she is quick and moves around a lot.  Any suggestions?

I would think going tonight without eating should be acceptable since surgery was today. Maybe wait and try again in the morning with a known favorite, i.e. Chicken. I'd not give pain pill on empty stomach.

Disclaimer, I'm a nurse, not a vet. ;-)..

Good luck
Our Shaka got neutered today. Our vet told us, to give him a little water tonight. Maybe some food , though not to be surprised if he's not eating. He should eat normally tomorrow. Poor guy also has 2 ear infections :(
Depending on the pain medication it may be fine on an empty stomach. What is it? It' she antiinflamatories that cause the most problems with no food.

Typical not to eat after a surgery, each day afterward gets closer to normal.

Late last night I held her in bed and dipped each piece of food into pumpkin and hand-fed it to her. She got enough to take her pain pills. It was a very long night. She panted a lot so I kept a little bowl of water on the night stand to give to her throughout the night. She's acting a little more normal this morning.

I'm glad you are seeing improvement. I think the panting is sometimes related to pain. I'm not a vet or a nurse, just a long-time dog owner. I hope you both are able to rest today and that you see big improvements this weekend. Poor Crush.

Hope she is much better today!

I think it is pretty common not to eat after surgery.  She will be okay in a few days.  Depending on the medicine, you may want to hold off on that.  Usually it says "Take with Food" on the bottle if you need to give it with food.  Groucho did not eat for a few days after surgery but then he started eating everything.  He lost ten pounds from when he stopped eating until after the surgery, but put most of it back on when he started to eat.

Thanks, everyone. She has been whimpering a little but she is nice and cozy on a body pillow and blanket. Thankfully I get two weeks off of work for Christmas so I get to be with her while she recovers.

I hope she continues to recover without incident, she's a lucky girl to have her Mama home with her!

Im glad to hear she is acting a little more normal this morning. Im a big advocate of pain management for everyone, so if you can get her to even take some crackers with her pain pills, then continue to medicate her. Especially if she is whimpering. I agree with giving with food, as most pain meds can make anyone nauseous, so try any irresistible food you can find. Also, vomiting puts some stress on the incision area and causes pain too, so there are several reasons to avoid some meds on an empty stomach. Bella was the same her first 48 hours after her surgery, but by day 3 I could hardly keep her from jumping off the couch and she was eating fine and no meds were needed. Hope you have a good day and night.

I would think Crush will be better by Monday.
