Depression

My husband is near death, in hospice in our home. i think Chloe is picking up on my sadness, and seems depressed herself. She turned one, and used to be full of life. She won't even play at the dog park but just sits with me. Anyone have any experience with this?

I had my sister in law at my home for hospice. It  was a very gratifying experience to be able to do that for her and her children. Her dog, a Jack Russell-Snickers stayed by her, but never on the bed-we had the bed in the living room so she could be around everything. One day Snickers climbed on the bed and edged her way up to  Cathy's chest and laid ther with her head down staring at Cathy's face. Cathy passed away like that, with snickers right there, a short time later. She never left the bed until everyone had left. She went through the same thing. She is her little roudy Jack Russell beastie now. but it took awhile. I believe she helped you and your husband with her being there. There is some connection between us and our dogs that I don't think non dog people can ever understand. But Chloe will be there to comfort you too.

There are so many precious stories about a faithful canine at the deathbed or grave site of it's master. It is a powerful example of love and devotion. One we would all do better to emulate. Thank you for telling us about Snickers.

It's been seven weeks today since my husband passed away. Chloe has bounced back and loves going to the dog park every evening to play with all her "friends". She is such a delight! I enjoy sitting on the park bench and doing (or thinking of) nothing more than the canine hilarity taking place in front of me. Life can certainly take unexpected turns. Thankfully, God is still in charge.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband.  Animals pick up on our emotions and energy... so no doubt your baby is feeling depressed.  You have each other to help through this difficult time. Animals bring us such healing and during this time you need your dog as much as your dog needs you. Together... together... you will support each other.  My prayers go to you and yours.

Thank you. I don't know how much she may be still affected by my husband's illness and death. I started obedience classes with her this week (she was phenomenal), and I take her to the dog park at least 4 or 5 evenings a week. She's bounced back really well. However, I still have moments when sadness overwhelms me, and Chloe always seems to be right there, as close as she can get to me, like she anticipated it before it happened.
