Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
It's been awhile since we've had a poop discussion, so I thought I'd start one.
We don't have much of a yard, so I take Halas on walks to do his business. I use the blue poop bags to clean up after him. The problem is the smell created by bags full of poop sitting in a very hot garage during the summer. If I put them directly into the garbage can, the smell is overpowering when I have to open the garbage can to put something else in. This summer, I filled a bucket up half way with cedar mulch, and I put the poop bags in the bucket until garbage day. That has helped a little, but the garage is still pretty smelly. I was talking to my cousins about it a few weeks ago, and they half-jokingly suggested using a diaper genie. They said it works for their baby's poop, so why wouldn't it work for doodle poop? I think they have a point, but I don't have kids, so I've never used a diaper genie. But if it allows you to have dirty diapers around without your house smelling like baby poop, it would probably help a garage smell less like dog poop. Has anyone ever tried this? Or does anyone have a method they use that helps with the smell of multiple poop bags?

Ok Leslie-This is funny because your story is EXACTLY like mine. We had a streak of 90 degree days and we have a fence, so we tie the plastic bags in a knot and they end up in a pile because we don't want to unlock the fence gate everytime they go. So one day I was like man, that looks bad with those bags there. My DH likes to throw them over the gate and I told him I'm sure the neighbors love to see that in the alley. I headed off to find a solution and came home (when DH was at work) with
one of those suncast outdoor garbage cans, put a bag in it and started storing the poop bags in there instead. DH didn't say anything just rolled his eyes, went to work the next day and told a guy that he's not saying anything about the smell until I say something first. Well, it did stink bad and I was waiting for him to say something like he always does, finally I couldn't take it and said why does it smell so bad if it has a lid. He said what did you think was going to happen? It's like your steaming it in there of course it will smell! So now we are back to the alley dumpster a real pain and so smelly that you have to throw and run! So I was interested in seeing what others do so thanks for posting.
I wonder why the bucket Dori uses doesn't smell like that?? I see my neighbor doing this and I have flash backs of the plastic garbage can. It will be interesting to see what your solution will be. Good luck!
"Throw and run" - OMD, I almost lost the Dr. Pepper in my mouth as I read that - too funny! I do that also with Big Gray (our sanitation-provided can). I use plastic shopping bags when I go on turd hunts, or should I say "poop shopping"? Every time I put trash in that can, I have to hold my breath. One day it was so bad (I guess from the heat) that I ended up parking the can under a tree several feet from the house. I need a better solution also.
I'm just glad I rarely have to use baggies. There was just never a good way to keep the stink down with 2-3 dogs. It was always either gross or stinky ... well ALWAYS stinky. And we had to be careful to empty the small trash can into the curbside trash can BEFORE the trash got picked up otherwise it would be nasty odors for a week...blech.
