Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
What is the difference between an Australian labradoodle and a plain labradoodle? Personality, coat, temperament?
thanks

A labradoodle is a cross between a lab & a poodle, just as a golden doodle is a cross between a golden retriever & a poodle. An Australian labradoodle is a cross between poodle (standard, miniature, toy), labrador retriever, irish water spaniel, curly coat retriever, american cocker spaniel, and english cocker spaniel.
All of those?
Nobody really knows for sure what-all was mixed in to some of the original Australian stock. If you start digging on line, you see rumors of anything from Wheaten Terriers to Afghan Hounds. But the breeds Diane listed are in there, and many ALD breeders still breed with cockapoos every so often.
Australian Labradoodles (ALDs) are also multi-generational. Meaning that the parents of an ALD are both ALDs, and all sets of grandparents are also ALDs. For some reason I have in my head that ALDs go six generations back, but I could be totally wrong on that! Because they are multi-generational, you theoretically can have a bit more of a predictable coat, and can more easily predict adult size, temperament, etc. (But like with humans, we all know that sometimes the apple does end up falling far from the tree!!)
Margaret ~ that is my understanding also.
I have researched Charlie's and his goes back 5 generations on the mom's side (I found the standard poodle in the sixth generation that was bred to an ALD, and then forward to Charlie's litter. On the sires side, I went back 6 generations, and found only ALDs on both sides. So I know for sure that he is multi-generational. That was the reason I bought him because I wanted a fleece non-shedding coat, and a great temperament and I got it. Yeah!
