I bought Winston a very cute leash from Martha Stewart's new line of Pet Supplies. Tuesday night on our walk Winston picked up a piece of trash. I reached down to grab it from his mouth and placed my hand high on the leash. The LEASH OPENED with the slightest pressure. The clasp of the leash moves on both sides and opens in the middle, not like most leash's that just open on one side when you push down the lever. Winston started bolting back to our home, which was on the other side of VERY BUSY street. My fiance tackled Winston about four feet from the road. Winston let out the biggest cry/scream/bark/horror that I have ever heard. At the time I also thought he pooped himself, but later found out that dogs can excreate from their anal glands when they are exteremly scared or frightened. I took him to the emergency animal hospital and after four hourshe was lucky enough to come home with some bruising and pain meds, however, I can only imagine what COULD HAVE BEEN.
This product is NOT safe! I called PetSmart's main office this morning to file a complaint. Let EVERY dog owner you know not to even thing about purchasing this product. The more I thought about it, the more of it a reality it became that Winston or any other dog could have pulled hard enough for the clasp to break.

OH my goodness, I just entered a complaint on Pet Smart's web-site (see below) and complained to the manager and sent an email to Martha
Stewart.com complaining about the same thing! I guess I shouldn't expect
any action then! I see you wrote this and spoke to some one in July -
well it's the end of December now - I wonder how many other people have
complained in the meantime! They should be ashamed of themselves - do
you by any chance have the name or contact details for the person who
called you? I would like to see whether they will pretend they don't
know anything about it if I contact them!
DO NOT BUY THIS LEASH IF YOUR DOG WEIGHS MORE THAN 10LBS!!!! Yes the catch is very novel and
easy to use BUT it absolutely will release if your dog pulls against it
and you will have a loose dog.
We have a 5 month old border collie puppy who weighs 20lbs - not a big
dog by most peoples standards. We had the leash with the matching collar
from when he was 8 weeks old. It came loose once, when he lunged after a
squirrel - I thought that maybe the catch wasn't properly closed and
dismissed the incident. When he turned 5 months we bought the matching
medium harness. On our first walk he was sitting waiting for the walk
signal at a crosswalk. When the light came on, he jumped forward to
cross and the leash came right off and he was loose in the middle of a
busy junction.
I thought maybe it was a faulty catch or was too old because we had had
it for a few months. We went right to the PetSmart and bought a new one.
First walk with that one, same problem, he lunged and he busted right
out of it. I went back to PetSmart to complain and was told to complain
to Martha Stewart so I have and am posting this here to say BEWARE!!!!!!
Yes, it looks really cute and I am sure if you have a little dog, or one
that walks well to heel, it will be OK for you but personally I would
not take the chance - this is the death of a pet waiting to happen. Very
surprised that this product would carry the Martha Stewart name.
