It seems lately I've had the very distinct feeling that Banjo is trying to send me telepathic messages. What else could it be???? He walks over to where ever I happen to be sitting and will just stand there staring into my eyes. It's impossible to ignore him. I mean it's as though he's trying to bait me into a a staring contest! If my mother were here I might be likely to yell out "Mommmmmmmmm he's staring at ME!!!!" OK, I realize he is "just a dog" and he's probably not "into" staring contests. But clearly he is trying to "speak" to me......trying to "tell" me something. And being just "a human"....I'm just not getting it!!!! I feel so incompetent!
It does seem that we spend a good bit of time trying to figure out what Banjo wants. Sometimes he's very "direct" and other times you just have to be very "intuitive". Two weeks ago I had put a tiny piece of dehydrated liver treat (his all time favoritest, bestest treat in the world) on the windowsill over the kitchen sink after finding it in my pocket. That evening as we sat watching television, Banjo wandered into the kitchen, laid down and started moaning. WTD???? This was way out of character for him. He always stays right where we are....so this raised concern with us....what could be wrong???? What could he want.....is he hunger??? There's water in his bowl....he's eaten plenty today....well, it took me a while and then he stood up and aimed his nose right at the treat on the windowsill. Treat given.....happy dog wanders back into living room to re-join the pack.
Two nights ago we went upstairs to bed and Banjo refused to come up. After much coaxing he finally came up but would not settle down. Banjo is much like DH...a creature of habit for sure....and this was not part of his routine. Now what? We were immediately concerned as we'd already fretted that he hadn't done his usual "2 poops" that day and only done one...so he must need to go outside....so DH took him outside.....nothing....no go! Coaxing him back up to the bedroom and tell him to lay down...lights off...and shortly thereafter we hear the pacing....and then he's by the door....moaning. What do we do??? I convince DH to just let him out .... maybe he's decided he wants to sleep downstairs...he's a big boy now....maybe he wants his privacy. Now I'm laying in bed at full alert listening for his footsteps. Finally I can't stand it any longer and get up to see what he's doing.
I look by the front door, he's not there. Check the living room, he's not there. Walk into the kitchen...he's standing there in full darkness.....staring at the window! OMD.....I'd left another crumb of a liver treat there earlier that day! I think, he thought if he stood there and stared at it long enough it would come to him....and sure enough it did!!!!! Once he got the treat it was upstairs to bed for both of us. We're still laughing. : )

OMD....I can't believe Hattie woke up thinking about her treats.....she and Banjo would make quite a team!
Whew, I thought we'd lost you to the dark side Carol. Luca does this sort of thing often. I think he's nut and then I find the toy where he can't get it etc. Sometimes he cries by his crate because his food is locked in, guess why, and he's decided he wants it. And so it goes.
LOL.....Don't be so sure you haven't F!
This sounds so much like Fudge. Most of the time I have no clue what she wants. She is such an unusual dog and I love her so much, but I think she is WAYYYYYYYYYYY smarter than I am :) Poor Banjo...having to moan for his treats. I had better come get him.
I don't think he'd go with you Laurie.....he's sitting here getting bits of the cheese I'm munching on. And I know how you feel....I think Banjo is probably much smarter than me too! LOL!
"I had better come get him." Laurie this made me laugh really hard. So selfless you are, always thinking of the doodles ;)
Funny! I could just see this happening. Banjo has learned the fine art of communication. I can just picture him standing in the dark kitchen, staring at the window. Trav will do this too--if a toy is left on a table or counter, he'll stare at it, and if ignored will eventually make a little whining noise. He might not even play with that toy very much, he just doesn't want it out of reach.
Sounds familiar.
Tara does this too. Even if it is something she doesn't really want...but if it is her's it MUST be within her reach.
I'm amazed that Banjo knew that treat was on the windowsill and was still thinking about it after you'd all gone to bed! So much for dogs "living in the moment", lol.
JD has a very limited repertoire. If he's staring at me, he's trying to tell me that it's time to eat, time to take a walk, or time to throw a ball. It's easy to tell when he just wants some affection, because he comes right over and turns his butt towards you for some scratching. :)
Karen.....I've never felt that Banjo "lived in the moment". I've seen so many instances of "pre-planning"...and "lying in wait". He'll actually leave a specific toy by the door when we're heading out so that it's right there when we come back home....he goes right to it! And yep....he asks for affection just like JD.....butt first!
So glad I have head first affection seekers : )
