It seems lately I've had the very distinct feeling that Banjo is trying to send me telepathic messages.   What else could it be????   He walks over to where ever I happen to be sitting and will just stand there staring into my eyes.   It's impossible to ignore him.   I mean it's as though he's trying to bait me into a a staring contest!    If my mother were here I might be likely to yell out "Mommmmmmmmm he's staring at ME!!!!"      OK, I realize he is "just a dog" and he's probably not "into" staring contests.   But clearly he is trying to "speak" to me......trying to "tell" me something.   And being just "a human"....I'm just not getting it!!!!    I feel so incompetent!

It does seem that we spend a good bit of time trying to figure out what Banjo wants.    Sometimes he's very "direct" and other times you just have to be very "intuitive".   Two weeks ago I had put a tiny piece of  dehydrated liver treat (his all time favoritest, bestest treat in the world) on the windowsill over the kitchen sink after finding it in my pocket.   That evening as we sat watching television, Banjo wandered into the kitchen, laid down and started moaning.   WTD????   This was way out of character for him.   He always stays right where we are....so this raised concern with us....what could be wrong???? What could he want.....is he hunger???  There's water in his bowl....he's eaten plenty today....well, it took me a while and then he stood up and aimed his nose right at the treat on the windowsill.   Treat given.....happy dog wanders back into living room to re-join the pack.

Two nights ago we went upstairs to bed and Banjo refused to come up.   After much coaxing he finally came up but would not settle down.   Banjo is much like DH...a creature of habit for sure....and this was not part of his routine.   Now what?   We were immediately concerned as we'd already fretted that he hadn't done his usual "2 poops" that day and only done one...so he must need to go outside....so DH took him outside.....nothing....no go!    Coaxing him back up to the bedroom and tell him to lay down...lights off...and shortly thereafter we hear the pacing....and then he's by the door....moaning.   What do we do???   I convince DH to just let him out .... maybe he's decided he wants to sleep downstairs...he's a big boy now....maybe he wants his privacy.    Now I'm laying in bed at full alert listening for his footsteps.   Finally I can't stand it any longer and get up to see what he's doing.

I look by the front door, he's not there.   Check the living room, he's not there.   Walk into the kitchen...he's standing there in full darkness.....staring at the window!    OMD.....I'd left another crumb of a liver treat there earlier that day!    I think, he thought if he stood there and stared at it long enough it would come to him....and sure enough it did!!!!!     Once he got the treat it was upstairs to bed for both of us.    We're still laughing.   : )

Tank will stare at you intently when he wants something and then he will do this thing that is between a high bark and a moan (like he is trying to talk) until you get up and see what he wants.  I keep asking him if "Timmy is in the well" (remember Lassie) and he looks at me like this Timmy kid needs to stay inside.  Tank plans things, from when it's treat time to what toy he wants to take outside  (he will pick up different toys until he finds the perfect one).  Sully, not so much.  Sully is an "in the moment" kind of guy.

LOL....Cyndi....I often think Lassie lives inside Banjo!    Isn't it funny how different your two doodles are?  Just like kids!

Just hope Banjo does not learn to teleport himself like the Lassie in Dean Konntz's book Relentless.  Think of the challenges that would present!

Whoa.....this sounds like an interesting read....I'm going to have to look it up Christine.

"Timmy needs to stay inside".... I'm laughing out loud, dying! Tank is one smart dood!

Add Sedona to the list of telepathic starers - it happens every evening, just as my husband and I settle in for some TV watching.  Stare - guess what she wants/needs - do it - stare again - guess again - do something else - stare again - and so it goes until she's FINALLY satisfied and we can ALL settle down!  It drives my husband crazy!!!!

LOL.....my you ARE well trained!   Sedona sounds like she's very patient with your "learning curve".

It's funny I have one starer, Calla, and one vocal doodle, Luca. Luca has many different sound he makes depending on the situation.

Darwin is a silent communicator, but he will definitely get his point across. He has three main techniques. Putting his head on your knee and staring up at you unblinkingly, standing lengthwise right in front of the tv so you can only see the top 6" of the screen, and pacing back and forth between you and what he wants.

It's funny how they learn to position themselves between you and whatever you are looking at. My cat does this too and likes to stand between me and the computer monitor when she wants something. Fortunately Tara is too short to block the TV and can't get on the desk. :)  It sounds like Darwin is the strong, silent type.

Awwww Darwin it's nice that you have a few techniques to fall back on.   Camilla.....it's that "silent" thing that cracks me up......when they simply stare.....it looks like they're trying to "drill" into our poor, numb minds!

Kona is a stare-er too. Every evening at 5 pm he instantly appears next to me staring with a big grin on his face. If he is sick in the night he comes to my side of the bed and stares at me (no smile). We were dog-sitting a friend's lab for three weeks, and she did the same thing but it took me longer to figure her out. Did she want to go out and the lights were off? Was she hungry, thirsty? It took me a few days but I learned to interpret her stare too. They are working so hard to train these silly caretakers of theirs.
