So yesterday we are walking in our downtown area and going by some sidewalk cafes. There is a woman eating at one of the restaurants and she has her dog next to her. Turns out the dog is a goldendoodle. So she stops us and asks ,”is that a goldendoodle?” and I said, “yes” She says oh I love his color how unusual and I say well he is part setter he is an Irish Goldendoodle. She looks at me and says very coolly so he isn’t a legal goldendoodle?I didn’t really know what to say, I mean is GD a breed now? Or is it just a type of dog ? I kind of felt weird, for those that may have “mixes” like good ol Snickers what do you tell people? Do you think Snickers is a goldendoodle? Having sort of a crisis of identity for the pup right now!
I guess technically he's an Irish doodle? I have no idea and quite frankly, who cares! Snickers is GORGDOUS. He's definitely a doodle....and I LOVE all doodles :)
I don't know what she meant by "legal", how weird! I've never heard of an Irish Goldendoodle, is he Irish Setter/ Golden Retriever/ Poodle? He does have a gorgeous color!
Well, the word "ABSURD" certainly comes to mind after reading your quote from the "stranger lady"!!! How do you spell S-N-O-B??? There are many grey areas in the doodle world in my opinion. Tara is an ALD but everyone calls her a Labradoodle and I just agree even though they are totally different breeds really. When people ask I sometimes say she is a Labradoodle (mini) and other times say she is an ALD. It just depends on how much time I have. Trying to explain her genetic make up is quite confusing for people and they don't really care anyhow. So Snickers can be whatever you want him to be! Today a Goldendoodle (calm day), tomorrow an Irishdoodle (high energy day), the next day a Snickerdoodle (the perfect day!). :) Have some fun with it. The next time someone asks you can say" Well, today he is a..."
I am totally against all this snobbery. But both my dogs are ALDs and to me at least they are labradoodles. Were there any other dogs in their mix,? None that I know of but primarily they are a mix of labrador and poodle. At any rate, when people ask I say they are labradoodles. I am curious, why do you think your ALDs are not labradoodles? and that they are totally different breeds?
Well, it is funny you should ask. I was discussing this subject with Tara's breeder this very weekend!! ALD's were originally Labrador and Poodle mixes but over the generations other breeds have been bred into the lines in an attempt to acquire consistancy in the coats and allergy friendliness. According to Tara's breeder the most dominant breeds currently showing up in genetic testing of ALD's is Poodle and Cocker Spaniel. The Labrador gene rarely shows up in DNA testing on the ALD's anymore (according to her) because the poodle and cocker spaniel genes have been moving forward genetically while the Labrador's have become more and more diluted.
That is why I consider them a "different breed". I am NOT saying one is better than the other, just that they are different. There doesn't appear to be much "L" in the ALD's anymore!! :)
Go know : ) There's lots of controversy about who did what and I don't think it will ever be clear. But really, who cares? If you love you dogs what difference does it make after all.
