So yesterday we are walking in our downtown area and going by some sidewalk cafes. There is a woman eating at one of the restaurants and she has her dog next to her. Turns out the dog is a goldendoodle. So she stops us and asks ,”is that a goldendoodle?” and I said, “yes” She says oh I love his color how unusual and I say well he is part setter he is an Irish Goldendoodle. She looks at me and says very coolly so he isn’t a legal goldendoodle?I didn’t really know what to say, I mean is GD a breed now? Or is it just a type of dog ? I kind of felt weird, for those that may have “mixes” like good ol Snickers what do you tell people? Do you think Snickers is a goldendoodle? Having sort of a crisis of identity for the pup right now!
I agree with F. We all have "Doodles" and they are the best!!! They are smart, sweet, loving, gentle and our best friends. They totally make our tails wag and that is what it is all about!!!
I agree, Tara. Even the ALDs are all a little different. We're able to go back five generations with Guinness. Three generations ago they infused a Cockapoo in Guinness's line because they were trying to achieve some specific traits. It's all pretty interesting. I also agree that one is not better than another, but when you know the infusion breeds that were used in your dog's lineage it does provide some additional insight into some of their characteristics.
That is a good point, Jane. I think that it does provide some insights. Tara's litter was what is called an infusion litter. Her mom was a multi-gen ALD and her dad was a multi-gen cockapoo or Spoodle. This was done for the reasons you are stating plus to infuse some fresh blood into the lines. Apparently this is done fairly frequently as the Australian Labradoodle Club of America has a committee overseeing "infusion litters" as they call them.
Also, Jane, I am Ricki, Tara is the cute one!! :)
Sorry, we have veered off course a bit from Snicker Boy's issue!!
I agree with Donna. perfect reply to a snooty patooty....First it was the pure breed owners turning their noses up at our doodles, and now there are doodle owners that are like that? He is one gorgeous doodle, and that is all that counts, just that he is a doodle, no more no less...
Webster is a legal goldendoodle and he wears his rabies tag/registration to prove it. Charlotte is not legal - she's too young. She'll be legal in a couple weeks ;-)
That is a very silly question for someone to ask....what makes it even sillier is that golden retrievers were created originally by mixing irish setter and some other spaniel breeds. So I think Snickers is legal ;-) lol. http://www.rebelcreek.com/GoldenRetrieverHistory.html
Snickers is GORGEOUS! I think it is great to have the Irish side of the doodle family represented!! Most dogs now considered "purebreds" were once mixed breed dogs - that's how most of the breeds develop! This woman was brain-damaged as well as having no class.
There are no "legal" goldendoodles!! The "breed" is doodle....there a several branches to our beautiful dog families. You and Snickers can hold your heads high and be proud of your lovely Irish heritage. There are some people who just don't get it...sadly you ran into one of them.
Versus Illegal? I think most non-doodle people think doodles are illegal anyway. AKC etc.
I'm going to give the woman the benefit of the doubt. Often, we are at loss for the correct words. It is only words. She must have been taken back by the beauty and uniqueness of your dog--He is just stunning. She was just struggling with semantics is all.
