Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a 18 week old f1b puppy shedding.  Mom was standard poodle, Dad a Goldendoodle. Even though she is starting to doodle-out some, she is still mostly straight hair. When we brought her home she would shed a slight fuzz that you would notice on darker clothing and in our vehicles.  She is now shedding a lot.  Some have said it is her losing her puppy coat. Others have said she will just shed like a typical golden retriever.  Is there any signs to know what I can expect? We will love her regardless,  but allergies are a factor.

Love this photo Ashley.  What a cute, cute puppy!  I hope there are no allergy issues.  I have come to the conclusion, that those that do shed a bit are easier in the coat care department! Good luck.

Judging by her coat and the fact that she's already shedding pretty steadily at 18 weeks, I would say that your pup is always going to be a shedder. It's not really unusual, even with F1Bs. There are lots and lots of people here with  F1Bs and even higher generations who do shed. That's the thing with doodles; when you have a mixed breed with heavily shedding breeds like Goldens or Labs in the mix, you can never know if any individual puppy is going to be a shedder or not, and breeders need to be honest about that.  She's really too young to be going through a coat change.

Shedding doesn't typically get better as a puppy gets older. There are doodle puppies who don't shed until they reach adulthood, but rarely do they shed as pups and then stop as adults.

I agree with Karen and I am sad that the breeder let you be SURPRISED by this--when I have a shedder in a litter, I know by 6 weeks and there is usually a client who does not mind shedding usually are happy with their pup and a DISCOUNT.

My advice is to keep her fairly short to cut back on the shedding if it bothers you--some people do not care. Any pup in a litter of doodles, no matter what the parentage can be a throwback to the lab coat---they may get fluffy, but will still shed. I do know that some shed less as adults, but that is not a rule by any means and could be related to keeping them shorter.

I never understand how keeping them shorter cuts down on shedding. The hair stills falls out, lol. You just have short hairs all over instead of long hairs. I've fostered German Shepherds, and the little short hairs all over everything was harder for me to deal with than JD's long hairs all over everything

I agree--I guess people see it as less hair--but it isn't and if every doodle was as lovely as Jack is long, they probably would agree with you.

Also I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't cut a golden retriever's coat as it is made to keep them cooler in the warmer months? And that if you cut them it messes with their natural ability to cool off? (Our Nala looks totally retriever to me, and she is an F1b. She does shed and we don't mind one bit. ) To the original poster... you have one cute pup!
Christine

We had an Australian Shepherd/lab mix dog and keeping him 'shaved'  like the shortest part of a Springer Spaniel cut, made his shedding pretty much a non-issue.  I don't know  why, but cutting off that bit of fur and bathing every 8 weeks was magic for us.

PS--here is a pup that looked like your baby when young---he is a multigenerational doodle but sheds---you can see how much his coat filled out as he matured. By the way, if you click on the photo icon in the dock above (second from the left) you can imbed your photo in the discussion.

What an adorable doodle! Shedding or not! Cute as can be.

She is not losing her puppy coat yet. Some people have reported that their puppy shed and as an adult it doesn't but I haven't met a doodle like that.  In my experience, it it sheds as a puppy it will shed as an adult.

This is our 6 mos old boy. He had very straight hair as a pup-pup. I never would have believed he'd "doodle-out" like he has. He sheds a lot right now - before the last couple of weeks of the heavy shedding, he shed so little we thought we may have a non-shedder. His hair is also getting sparser, but the hair itself seems thicker. We have read that some doodles change their coat around this time - hoping his coat remains the same as now.

Has anyone had a dog start shedding at this age and stop soon after?

Thank you!
