Hi, Bella and Murphy are counter surfers to the Nth degree. And we are vigilant about what we leave out 99.9% of the time. This morning I left a crystal butter dish on the counter, with about 3 tbls of butter on it, uncovered. Totally forgot to put the lid on. My bad. Came home to glass everywhere on the floor, blood drips all around it and the butter gone. After checking tongues, jaws, gums, noses, paws and every other inch of them, other than some blood on Murphy's snout,I can not find the source of the blood and no one is actively bleeding.
I called the Vet right away, who suggested X-rays might show the glass or might not, but to give bread and food and watch for diarrhea, vomiting, further signs of bleeding and possible pancreatitis. It wasn't as much butter as they have eaten before, but I see how that could happen as well.
ANyone ever have THIS happen and what was your outcome? All this and we are leaving in 48 hours for a week at the beach in California and leaving them with a friend. Or not. Will keep you updated.

Sorry to hear this. I don't know if this helps, but years ago my cairn terrier swallowed a straight pin while we were out on a walk. I saw her pick it up but couldn't get to it before she swallowed it. She did prick her tongue, causing drops of blood to fall when she shook her head. I took her to the vet asap, and an x-ray showed the pin, about an inch long with a big round head, in her stomach. The vet gave me some kind of extra thick and gooey food which coated the pin and allowed it to pass through the alimentary canal without doing any damage. I had to investigate her poop for a few days with a chop stick, but in the end the pin reappeared, no harm done (except to my wallet and my sensibilities!). I suspect the bread will serve the same purpose, and hope that you have a similarly fortunate outcome.
Im hoping for uncomplicated passing as well. As with a pin, the possibility of getting stuck or causing a perforation is scary.
Jack ingested a good sized bone shard and it didn't pass. Two weeks later, he vomited it up. His poop was normal the entire time.
I remember that too. Like the bone, it's a wait and see and hoping to comes out someway or another.
I've never had experience with glass, but Guinness did get into some KFC chicken wing bones, chewed and swallowed them. I was frantic and the vet told me the same thing about feeding bread. He was able to pass them and was okay. I hope that Bella and Murphy will be fine....so sorry you have this worry just before leaving on vacation.
Yes the bread makes sense to me. They were loving it yesterday as they each got 3 slices throughout the day. Good thing they can't relate it to the incident or it would be a lot of reward for a bad deed in their minds.
So they had a normal night, no vomiting, diarrhea or signs of distress that Vet said to look for. I am sending positive vibes out to the universe that they are fine, and any glass will pass without a problem. But it could take awhile I'm sure so we will continue to watch. I guess my fear is glass getting stuck in the intestines and causing infection or a hole or even just irritation that will hurt them. I have interviewed 2 trainers yesterday and will be talking to a 3rd today to set up in house training for counter surfing. I have tried all I know to do, and the biggest problem is I can't catch them because they don't even go into the kitchen when we are home. I hope we will make the kitchen a "hot spot" and they will learn that garbage is off limits too.
I'm obviously just human and will forget things, so I can't count on that anymore. Remembering 99% of the time just isn't good enough when you see something like this happen. Any others with counter surfers.....please get them to stop for their safety and health.
I hope everything turns out okay. Could be a cut on tongue. Another item to be aware of is Aluminum foil which could cause some damage too.
Thank you DonMarie. I think there was a mouth injury of some sort since one of them had put some blood on my bed pillow and they usually lay their head on it. But I just couldn't find a source of active bleeding.
Oh boy what a worry for you. Hoping all will pass without incident.
Thanks Nicky. Fingers crossed
Just seeing your post Sue. What a worry! I'm glad you are looking into trainers, I remember your earlier post asking for ideas to stop the countersurfing. Sounds like you have a couple of tough cases there! I'm hoping for a good outcome with this glass issue and that it is the last time you have to worry like this about a surfing disaster!
