Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know there have been many discussions on this
particular topic, but I just wanted to share my recent story.  I had my
first ever conversation with a doodle-disliker today.

I ran to Walmart today -- I know, I don't like it much either, but I'm a student on a budget :) -- to get some things and, like always, had to visit the pet section to check out some toys for Albus.  I got him three squeaky toys.  As I was getting my stuff checked out by the cashier, she noticed I had the dog toys and asked what kind of dog I had.  I told her I had a goldendoodle, and her disgusted response was, "It's a shame to spend a lot of money on a mixed breed dog like that."

Umm....excuse me?  I was flabbergasted.  Just the way she said it was snotty.  It was like she was trying to make me feel guilty, but I certainly don't remember asking for her opinion about my choice of dog.  I had to bite my tongue really hard so I wouldn't let the F-bomb fly or really let her have it.  I simply replied, "He's worth every penny I paid for him, and I wouldn't trade him for anything."  It was hard to hold back, but I really didn't feel like getting into a debate with the ignorant woman.  Clearly she's just uninformed and biased.  I wish I could have thought of something "mouthier" to say, but I really was at a loss for words.

What would you have said in this situation?  Would you have handled it differently than I did?  I'd like to know for next time, so I can have more things to say :)

Exactly! YOU NAILED IT! How would you even know what a dog cost unless you were researching them yourself! And why would you research them? Perhaps you have seen one out somewhere and thought it was the cutest dog you have ever seen, smart, low shedding, goofy, friendly, fun...The MOST AWESOME dog ever...and you thought you wanted one too??? Then you unfortunately see the cost and get an attitude? COST is the MAIN thing people get an attitude about with doodles. If they cost $50 - I bet you there would be a lot less negativity.

Anyway, I think I got excellent "deal" on my dog....If I had known what a joy he would bring to my life before I bought him...I would have paid...triple the cost!!!!!!!!
I agree about purebreds costing just as much. I was researching Great Danes prior to getting Darwin and almost every single good breeder I researched charged between 1800-2500 dollars for a puppy. It was the norm.
Yep - I had thought about poodles before and the good breeders charge over $2K for most....
I love reading your comments Camilla..and then I look at your profile pic of Darwin and all I can say is... PRICELESS!!!! What an adorable doodle with his character shining through! LOL
Thank you. :-)
I admire all of you who ' started a search, or studied the breeders, or knew what you wanted'-- the comments I so often hear.

I just like DOGS. We wanted a mutt, only. That was the requirement. This runs along the lines of severe prejudices and intolerance in our society. How far we have NOT come.

It is only after I got Spud did I realize how LUCKY I was to get such a special dog. But all dogs are special. Yes, there certainly are dogs I would not want to own but still that is just a matter of personal taste and living arrangements.
I did the same as you, Joanne. I applied to two local rescues and only had general requirements, like the dog had to be good with kids and cats. I wanted an adult dog because at that time in my life I didn't want to deal with "puppy madness", chewing, housebreaking, basically starting over from square one with a puppy. I was too used to living with a well-mannered adult dog. I did want poodle in the mix. That was all. That the dog I adopted turned out to be a "doodle" was just the luck of the draw. He might as well be an otterhound or a Heinz 57 for all I cared, or care now.
When I decided to get Calla, I had had lots of negative input from family ranging from sons on to cousins. They all thought one dog was sufficient. So when I decided to do it I said to myself, I'm an adult, it's my house, my money , my life and I'm the one who has to live with this decision." And then I chose her. So I feel that way about my choosing doodles too. Who cares what others think? I don't think this woman's comment was worth spending one moment's thought or emotional energy on.
Consider the source - I am sure she has reached her peak in life as a checkout girl at Wal Mart :-)
AMEN Denise - you said what a lot of us were obviously thinking!
I'll occasionally be shy about having purchased Porter when I am with a crowd of people whose dogs all came from shelters, but that's it. Which types of dogs had supervised sex, who cares!? (of course, barring pairings that can't happen in nature, and health testing and all that important stuff)
That lady sounds like a jealous idiot.
Dont ever be shy to speak your mind!!!!! It would have shocked me too but you must realize that there are quite a few uninformed people who roam this planet and all we can do is walk among them with our heads high. Intelligence is not a given here guys...Mouthier puts you on the same playing field so stay the course and think of how many Great Comments most respectable folks have. Possibly you could say, if at allanything, say "That means alot coming from a person with a degree like yours." DOODLES RULE!!
