Roo has been on Clavamox, fortiflora, and Rhymadil (sp? anti inflammatory for dogs) for about ten days.  He had an infection in his anal glands.  That is cured, but he now has some funny symptoms:

Even though he is a total chowhound, he is eating about half of his food and very slowly.   Normally he eats in about 30 seconds.  He seems like he wants to eat more, looks at me, picks at his remaining food then just sighs and lays down by it.  The laying down in is normal it is to guard it from Tigger until I pick it up.  He also has the hiccups many times a day.  Still pooping normally, no more scooting

I took him back to the vet.  Diagnosis - tracheitis, i.e. sore throat and another week of Rhymadil and was told to feed him chicken and rice or canned food to keep him eating. Also was told the hiccups were actually small stetches of a little dry cough

Anybody out there had a similar experience - I, of course am thinking throat cancer.  I need reassurance or at least someone who has heard of a doggy sore throat.

Sorry to hear this, Maryann. I have no experience with throat ailments in dogs, but I would absolutely not worry about cancer. I was thinking that he might not be eating because his stomach might be bothering him. Rimadyl tends to be very tough on the stomach, and the hiccups plus the reluctance to eat made me think of acid indigestion. Is he burping at all? I could be totally off base, since you vet diagnosed it as athroat problem. But maybe you could ask if it would hurt to give him some generic Pepcid or Zantac?

At any rate, I hope he feels better soon.

Dogs do get tracheitis and certainly Roo could have it Cancer would not enter my mind.

Poor Roo.  Try not to worry, it sounds like your vet is giving him good care.

No experience with doggy sore throat but my cat had kitty sore throat a couple of months ago. She behaved just as you are describing Roo-acting hungry, trying to eat and then just giving up on it.  It was so sad. She also had some swelling in the glands in her neck but was treated and is fine now. Maybe the anal gland infection caused his immune system to take a dip and he couldn't fight off other infections as normal. I think he will fine find soon. :)

Thanks everyone - it makes me feel better.

Poor Roo. Maybe with the chicken & rice add water for a broth. Years ago I had a little Scottie who had laryngitis and lost her voice!! I'm sure her throat was sore too!!
Murph was also on the meds for his anal gland infection, and my vet had me giving hin one Pepcid tablet a day along with a probiotic to prevent the nausea and loss of appetite. It worked great. Good luck.

Thanks I will add a pepcid

Feel better, Roo! I hope he heals quickly.

Poor Roo. Perhaps a little more water in whatever you are feeding would help soften it even more.

Awww....I hate when our dogs are sick. Poor Roo. It sounds like your vet is on top of this and I bet he will feel better soon.

Do hope you are seeing some improvement in Roo today?
