It seems that many of our doodles are living with feline family members. Below is a photo of Jackdoodle with my 14 year old Angora, Dinah, perched on the chair behind him. I'm wondering how many other DK members have kitties; maybe we should start a "Doodles & Cats" group. I'm sure there are some funny & cute stories about how our doodles interact with their feline brothers & sisters...anyone?
Being a NEW Doodle and cat owner - I think its a great idea! "Charlie" (yup, I named him this morning and he seems to respond to it so maybe this was his name) will very likely be quite the ham in front of a camera, but I'll wait for a few more days before I start snapping photos!
I got Dinah when my miniature poodle was 4 years old. Pawla the Poodle From Hell terrorized Dinah most of her life; she would jump right up onto my bed (kingsize) onto the exact spot where Dinah was lying. Yet, they were great friends, and kept each other company when no one was home, often lying near each other.
I use treats for housebreaking, and early on, my DD said that it was only fair that Dinah should get a treat when Pawla got one, since the cat did not have the opportunity to be rewarded for going potty outside. It became a ritual that lasts to this day. Since Dinah knew that she would be getting a "cookie" when Pawla came back inside, she would come running when she heard the back door open, and stand by her dish when I came in with Pawla.
Now that I have a fenced yard, sometimes Jackdoodle goes outside without me. When this happens, Dinah stands right by the back door and alerts me the instant that Jack comes to be let back in. She does this by meowing loudly. I now have my own "doggie doorbell", which requires no batteries, electricity, or installation....just a few crunchy "cookies." LOL
Cute story!! I wish I could get my dog and cat together, but the cat runs away and is not getting any friendlier--it doesn't help that the dog chases her with hunger in her eyes! i don't think she would hurt the cat, but will never catch her either way!
I have 3 cats. All 5 of my "babies" get along. Jordan feels it is her job to keep everyone's ears clean. It is cute she pins them down as if they are her puppies. My oldest cat Azrael is almost 16. I call her the Queen of the house. Jordan leaves her alone for the most part.I think it is because she is so old. Jordan does clean Azrael's ears but only when Azrael is in the mood.
Both dogs play with my other cats( Peja and M.J ) and all of sleep together. My Cats also eat the dog treats, they will not eat "cat" treats only the dogs. If I open the treat tin all the babies come running.
Our doodle's best friend is our 13 year old, 7 lb cat! The get under the dining room table together and bat at each other, mouth each other, make noises like the cat is being killed (when he is stuck in Mater's fur usually) and knock over the chairs. A couple of rowdy boys! Mater is about 1-1/2 and 70 lbs, but this cat can handle him! They get jealous when I'm giving the other attencion.
That's really cute!
Let's see how many more people we get who are interested in a group; I'll be happy to start one. I KNOW there are more cat owners on DK than we 5!
Yes, I expected a much snarkier comment when I saw you had posted here, LOL! Something about toxoplasmosis paws!
I'll tell you one thing, the cat is a lot easier & CHEAPER to take care of!
I'll tell you the truth, I don't love them either. I got Dinah as a "pet" for Pawla...pretty mean of me, I know, but she DOES have her claws, lol.
Jackdoodle had lived with a cat in his former home (which is probably where he developed his allergies to them), and he is very kind to her. The shelter had "cat tested " him prior to my adopting him. It's nice for him to have the company anyway. Not to mention the "treats" she makes for him...ugh.
One interesting thing I read about cats & dogs living together is the way they learn to approach each other from the other species' perspective...which is supposed to be a very unusual thing among animals of two different species. Cats learn to approach a dog from behind, or the side, the way dogs normally approach each other. (I have seen my cat surreptiously sniffing Jack's butt, LOL!) And dogs learn to greet the cat nose to nose, which they don't do with other dogs. Isn't that interesting?
