Found a trick that I thought I would share. I'll preface this with, yes, I should have a better trained dog. That aside, I have just discovered that when I blow (gently) into Porter's nose, he drops whatever he has in his mouth immediately. Awesome.

Just thought I would share this for anyone whose dog is not perfect on the drop it and release commands.

Love it. My other trick is putting my hand entirely in the dog's mouth. And while some may think that silly, I count on the gentle-mouthed nature of the retriever genes to be on my side! But I at least have the good sense not to put my head in a lion's mouth :)
Don't feel bad--I should have a better trained dog also. We have been working very hard since my foster was placed. When she came I realized Spud really lacked in his training. So everyday now is a training day.

This blowing thing--I have a question! Spud sees this as aggression--or so I think he takes it aggressively. He can stick his nose outside a car window and be just fine, but if I blow on him he gets wild, barks, and gets right back in my face.

Glad it works for you. I suppose whatever works is great.
Cool ! Charlie tries to catch the air when I blow the air in her face! Funny... I guess then, she will open her mouth and drop things, right? Nice discovery!!
Yup, that works with Luca too. But for things like his ball I just prefer to usually tell him , Okay, then I can't throw it." He gets the idea.
I have worked on "drop it" with Fozzy for over six months.......he knows the command but will not do it if there is not a treat within sniffing distance. He will not be fooled by just holding one in your "other" hand either. Two times without treating.....no cooperation. Maybe this will work!
I blow in Jack's nose to get him to swallow his pills!
Love the pill idea! Will try that for sure!
We did this with piper, and after about 2 or three days, he caught on and the blowing didn't phase him a bit after that. Although, not much phases this little guy, so it was more surprising that he even reacted to blowing at all! :o)
It is interesting. We all have had some different experiences with blowing on our dogs' noses...from aggression to apathy. I hope this continues to work...and I will keep it in mind for the pills.
