I was walking DerbyDoodle this afternoon, and on my neighbors drive was a full sized male deer.
Man, did I take a double take. He was standing quite still...and his antlers were fuzzy and looked immature ...as if they were growing
I prayed DerbyDoodle. Didn't make a sound or freak out when she saw him..she did neither, but here's the kicker.....how dangerous are they? Could he have charged us? Think you have a tic problem....we have at least a dozen living in the small wooded area near our house. That's why I a.m. In con flight over using a flea/ tic preventative

I don't do it, but I have an immune-compromised dog. I have also never seen a tick or had a tick on any of my dogs, so I believe that for my guy, the risk is low, especially since I also use flea/tick preventatives religiously. Lyme vaccine is probably the only one that JD's vets have never mentioned to me. It all depends on where you live and where your dog goes.

Rodney, I know you asked Karen, but I thought you might look at these maps and make a decsion based on your many locations.

This is a good resource, but I wish they had info by county, like the heartworm maps do.

There might be state maps? And in the end, the ticks don't know county lines.so if your in an orange state, surrounded by orange states odds are you could have trouble.

Yes, but some areas have a much higher incidence than others. Illinois as a state has a high incidence of heartworm positive cases, but when you look at the state maps, there are sections of the state where there haven't been any cases at all. On this map, Illinois is orange and is surrounded by orange states, but I'm willing to bet they haven't had many cases of Lyme disease in downtown Chicago. I think if you saw a map of the state itself, you'd see Cook County as being a lot lower than many other counties. That would make a difference in deciding to vaccinate or not, at least for me.

But then, we're a pretty big state. In some of those tiny NE states, I agree it doesn't matter.

Ask an

Oh never mind.

Here's a listing for Nj on human cases by county. I imagine other states have this sort of thing.

Here's the best article I have seen on Lyme disease in dogs. It also has a section on risk, prevention, and making the decision to vaccinate or not:
