Hi all: Jazz came down with an ear infection a couple of weeks ago. The vet put him on drops and an ear wash and thought it was probably a yeast infection. Did not seem to be getting better, so back to the vet. This time she put him on antibiotics 500mg twice a day and Prednisone. 20mg 2x day for 4 days, then 1x a day and tapering off until gone. I am not a big fan of prednisone, so I am a bit concerned about this. Has anyones dog been given this, and were there any problems? If it is in fact a yeast infection wouldn't antibiotics make it worse? He does get a probiotic powder every day mixed in with his food. Just now getting his digestive problems under control, and don't want to have that reoccur because of the antibiotics. Any suggestions?

Doesn't your home get redecorated in permanent blue when your dood shook his head? Puppy love from Joy & furry folk
For some reason-he never shook his head-but if you put it far enough into the canal=and then massage it in with their ear flap when they shake there should be no residue. Otherwise-look out-it does stain I hear.
Oh, yes, look out is right, lol! Gentian violet can stain clothes, hair, walls, and dogs really well! One of the reasons they stopped prescribing it for women's yeast infections.
Now that is funny-I used to have an occasional yeast infection-I am just imagining the results of using the "violet" stuff to cure it !! LOL, OMG that would have been interesting.
I pass you a mirror through cyberspace my dear. Now who is the fairest/ bluest in the land? LOL
You can't imagine; it would be like a tampon filled with ultra-violet gel, and I will leave the morning-after results to your imagination.
I am imagining it right now!! Not a pretty sight. But having said that- this stuff must be diluted or something because there was no mess when I put it in Thomas' ears. His ears smelled bad and were full of this thick brown smelly waxy like build up. He was only a baby 14 or 15 weeks old. I took him to the vet and they tested for ear mites-Negative they said. So they prescribed drops and an ear cleaner which I used for three weeks, He still smelled and the med's did not work. So, in his obedience class the trainer recommended this ear treatment. It took me a week to find it here in my city and I had to drive a long way to buy it. I tried it and it worked ike a miracle for us. For me thankfully, my "ears" or whatever are yeast free.
I'm glad for the ears. Just don't use it on the whatever LOL. I am assuming that you got some already made up. Could you pls tell us the name? I'd love to have some that isn't messy. Puppy love from Joy & furry folk
Porter's vet put a bunch of goo (sorry no name) in his ears on a Saturday under the assumption that it was bacterial. Said the culture would be back on Wedsnesday. He called Thursday and confirmed that it was bacterial and that the goo was the right treatment. My only job was to wipe away any thing that oozed out of his ears with a cotton ball. I bring him back at the ten day mark to check the progress.

Interesting how different all the treatments are...

Oh, I was billed $100 for the culture/swab.
