Bentley is obsessed with socks and panties! He's thrown up two in the last 10 days and I just pulled another one out of his mouth. Obviously this is extremely dangerous and I need to be more careful and sure the laundry is far from reach.

I've never heard of a dog swallowing the entire article. He does not even chew it!

I feel like a bad doodle mom for allowing this to happen.

Any suggestions beyond the obvious of keeping panties out if sight and reach?

This brings back memories of taking Mr. Cable our first dog to the emergency vet clinic so they could make him regurgitate a pair of pantyhose.  He was a puppy. I was dressing in the bathroom and I heard him "chomping" on something.  When I turned around he had gotten a pair of pantyhose out of the garbage and was chewing them.  I reached to grab them and he gobbled them down.  I was astonished and then scared to death.  We braved a huge snowstorm to get him to the vet.  The vet tech brought the pantyhose out in a towel and said "is this the pantyhose"?  Yuck!  He survived it and was the love of our lives for the next fourteen years.  Really the best thing to do is diligently keeping them out of his reach!  Good luck!

I really don't think there's any "fool proof" way to avoid this other than to keep the laundry where he can't get it.  To me it never was worth taking a chance on having my Doods end up with that very invasive surgery, so I make sure the laundry goes into the basket where they can't reach it and when it's done it gets put right away.  I suppose it might be possible to train a dog not to touch touch the socks and panties, but for a dog who has already shown an interest it would take some work.....and during the training phase you'd be taking a pretty big chance.  For me it just isn't worth it.

Hi Dee Dee,

Our doodle, Sherlock, also likes underwear!  It's so embarassing... He really likes my underwear.  He was really sneaky about it.  Unfortunately, last summer he had to have surgery to remove it from his tummy.  UGH!  We were really worried.  I have to be super careful about him getting into my drawer.  He was even tipping over the hamper to get my underwear.  SO GROSS!  I wish I had some answers... Now that you are aware I would just watch him more carefully.

Hope this helps,

Kara

Thanks for sharing your situation with Sherlock. I'm going to be sure it wont happen again. Bentley is so
Sneaky about it too!

I have no idea if this would work but Bentley is quite young.  I know when Myla was that age we would throw a can of pebbles if she was doing something we didn't want her to do.  She had no idea it was us and it scared her enough to stay away.  What if you set him up - and when he went for the socks you threw something like a pop can of pebbles?  He might associate the noise with the socks and underwear and stay away!  I know that people have done this with counter surfing - someone I know actually put fishing line through wieners and attached to a pop can of pebbles so that when their dog grabbed the wieners off the counter the pop can fell to the ground and the noise scared him.  That dog does not counter surf to this day - not sure if it works on other dogs though.   I think it's worth a try though because you definitely don't want Bentley having to go through the awful surgery and it is hard to keep socks out of his reach forever.

I feel your pain.  We just are recovering from surgery where Bexter had a sock removed from his belly.  We are now putting baby gate up at the foot of the stairs so he can't even get upstairs without one of us with him.  I am so nervous about this!  Good luck.

We are so lucky none of our dogs has ever gone after our clothes - other than puppy show chewing, so I don't have any suggestions other than have hampers with locking lids????

Maybe $$$$ will help. A $3,000 surgery sounds inevitable if this continues. Have you taken out health insurance ?. Do so right away. Today would be to late even. Not only is it inevitable, but many dogs don't make it. If they do, it's so very painful.
I did get hampers with lids. It helped 90% The other 10% was luck!

Yes, my vet told us about all the unusual stuff she has removed from the stomachs of dogs.  She was telling us that she has never removed a rawhide chew.  They make take a while, but they do move through the digestive system.  And anything that is made of plastic, nylon, etc. will not digest.  Best suggestion is just put things out of reach.  My dogs love the trash cans in the bathroom and we have had to place them on top of the toilet - not the nicest visual, but out of reach.

With my labs, I placed outdoor type trash cans in the kitchen.  The kind with the screw- on lids. Dog -proof lids I thought.  They were 4 feet tall so the noses could not get in there and reach even if the lid was not secure by accident.  Well, these labs would knock them down the basement stairs and the lids would come off.   :(   Smart Dogs

I finally took out my dishwasher and built in the trash can into the cupboard with a child proof latch. Easy to open for a human but totally dog proof.    Hey, cut a hole in your closet door.  A laundry shoot.  Easy.

Sometimes, you just have to trouble shoot the situations with different dogs.  But, YOU HAVE TO DO THIS.  Otherwise, you may just kill the dog  :(

Here is a link to do - it -yourself laundry shoots

I like this simple idea.  You purchase this separate.  Cut a hole in each closet door.   Place this in the hole so it looks nice.  The door to the closet stays shut at all times unless you are getting dressed.  Same price as laundry hampers, but a much better idea.
