Erratic doodle Help?

Seasoned DKers I need your help. 

 

My doodle Dempsey is acting really strange. 

Background:  Dempsey had gotten poop stuck in his fur around his bottom and my husband took clippers and shaved the hair off in the immediate area.  He then started to drag his bottom on the ground and everytime he walked he woud tuck his bottom under.  then he would sit and just look terribly uncomfortable.  I really just thought he was reacting to the feeling of short hair (my husband didn't shave it down to the skin just mad it shorter).  So after one day of this crazy walk/sit/ drag behavior I took him to the vet.  She said that from all the licking and dragging he was doing that he's irritated the area. She shaved off more hair gave me a salve to put on his bum and a steroid to take for the next 7-10 days. 

 

and there lies the problem.  He is on day 2 of the steroid and his breathing is so erratic.  He's panting like crazy and I'm concerned.  He also is VERY clingy, way more than usual.  I called the vet and she didn't seem too worried.  Does anyone have any suggestions he just seems so out of sorts and I'm only on day 2 of the steroid with 9 more to go...

When I would shave my shih Tzus butts they acted strange the first day or so, they would drag their butts on the ground, constantly look back there, sniff and just feel funny.  I knew it felt different for them because the hair was gone, it passed after a day or two.

I was doing a search for prednisone and came across this post. Duncan was prescribed this steroid on Monday, and since then has not been himself :(. He's not panting like Dempsey was, but he laying around a lot and Is very melancholy. From some of the earlier posts it seems like this could be a side effect of the meds but I'm not sure if it's serious enough to stop them or if he just needs a little time (he's only been on them for three days). Looks like I'll be calling the very tomorrow :(

Oh my I haven't been on here in awhile so sorry to have missed your post I hope Duncan is doing well? All turned out fine for Dempsey and we no longer groom him....for his sanity and mine!

I am happy to hear that Dempsey is doing better.  I would have been a nervous wreck!  I hate that these dogs can't talk to tell us how they're feeling!  It reminds me of when my boys were babies.
