Hello! I know it's not good to heavily exercise your dog after eating. I've seen on here the general rule of thumb is to wait 30 minutes after eating to play. However, I was wondering if there was any kind of rule of exercise before eating.
As Yeti gets older, his need for more exercise is growing haha. I've been thinking about taking him for a morning walk but the only time would be right before he eats. The schedule would look something like
6:40am walk until 7-7:10 then eat at 7:15. Is that too soon?

So glad you posted this info Karen.  I hope all new puppy owners see this.

Oh thank you Karen! I had a feeling that was probably the case! I will try to work a little something else out for him! He needs as much exercise as we can give him!

We always wait for an hour before and after meals for strenuous exercise (rapid walking or running around), but don't ever worry about going out for a calm stroll around mealtimes. Some people wait for less time, but I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to the possibility of bloat.

We also err on the side of caution and always allow an hour after eating before any exercise or play. We usually try to allow 1/2 hour before eating.

We lost our beloved Springer to bloat last summer.  It was unexpected and devastating - no discernible cause.   Laying down to eat doesn't cause bloat. If I had an un-neutered dog, I would have the vet tack the stomach when he/she was spayed/neutered. I would not over-exercise right before or after eating.

What exactly does tacking the stomach do?

Prevents it from flipping, which is what happens in bloat. The article I linked gives all the info. :)
