Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My 1+ yr old doodle, Watson, is typically very good at home, but our work schedules have gotten a little more busy the past month and we're not sure when it will calm down again. We have let Watson free roam around downstairs for about six months now and take him to daycare a couple times a week, but we're starting to think we might need to restrict his space again on days he doesn't go to daycare (its so expensive!) because we're seeing a little evidence of distructo coming out here and there (even with a two mile run and training in the morning). Unfortunately, since our house has a very "open" layout it makes it fairly difficult to block him off into just one room, like the kitchen. We crate trained him but he never particularly cared for his crate (only went in if we made him) and we also feel bad for crating him for longer durations. I'd like to give him a little more room than a crate, like an exercise pen but i feel like they are typically used for smaller dogs or puppies.
Does anybody use an exercise pen for an "adult" medium doodle? Are they sturdy enough and roomy enough?
I also want to add a larger variety of toys to my arsenal and keep them on rotation so he doesn't get as bored with them but any recommendations or tips are welcome!

Joann you can add a link by clicking on the "link" tab in the upper left of the reply box. You can then paste it into the space provided.
I haven't used one but there is a heavy duty ex pen available and apparently it can be combined with others of the same type so you can make it as large as desired.

A lot of this is going to depend on your particular dog. We have used the regular x-pen that we bought when the girls were puppies and we are still able to use it today if needed. The problem is going to be if you have a high energy, jumping type of doodle. We had one foster doodle that was able to jump the baby gate to our dog room ... he could do it stand flat footed ... no run required. I find that most of the time when we are gone our girls are sleeping ... not sure about your guy.
Our metal exercise pens are quite sturdy. The only problem is if they are climbers or jumpers and then they could potentially get out the top. But honestly, if a dog is going to be confined to the space of an exercise pen, it's really NOT that much better than a crate. They aren't going to walk or pace. They'll just switch positions and lay down again. I would keep working on the crate thing and use it.
Toby is about 44 lbs and does not tolerate being crated anymore. He does get destructive so he does need to be confined at times. We have both of these and either one works very well. We needed something very durable and strong for Toby because he will jump on the sides and chew so the ex-pens were not strong enough. Both of these have worked well for us. They are used inside only.
We have the Advantek Pet Gazebo 5' x 5' x 5', love it, very sturdy and easy to put up or down , we use it without the top on it, the only problem is the rubber caps, you will want to make sure Watson doesn't chew on them.

The other one we have is the Lucky Dog Modular Welded Wire Kennel 4' x 4' x 4'. This is very sturdy, no rubber caps, but not as portable, He does very well in this one
