Cooper has been taking some holistic medicine to rid her of tapeworms which we think is causing her problems, but hasnt had any since she got sick

..... she had explosive diarrhea when we were at work tuesday - we came home to 3 big puddles and splatters all over the kitchen and lounge (thankfully we dont have carpet there). DH and I had Wednesday off and spent the day washing towels, cloths, her bed, the futon cover etc and washing her bum. DH had today off work too. Tomorrow we both have to go to work, we cannot get the day off.

She is still pooping pure liquid. She has had nothing to eat apart from some pumpkin, 2 eggs today, and a few little treats as a reward for coming back inside. She is drinking lots of water thankfully.

Is there anything else we can give her to help the diarrhea , maybe pepto bismol?..... She is feeling fine in herself (apart from being hungry)

Tape worm is not passed from stool to dog from what I was told, Tape worm can only come from ingesting the actual flea. I am not 100 percent sure, but that is what I was told. The daycare where Jack went was overrun with fleas and that is why he kept getting it.

I do not believe that a dog that has tape worms needs to be quarantined. I believe as long as their was no poop on the floor or stuff it should be fine.

Someone correct me if I am wrong

You may want to cross post this on the Health and Medical group and Food Group for the food questions... and of course search those groups for information...  Hopefully Cooper will be feeling better really soon!!

Imodium after each liquid stool. But, I don't remember the dosage.

Also, I would cut her off from everything aside from the diarrhea diet. Boiled chicken, brown rice, apple sauce, plain yogurt, bananas. I did it for at least 4 days (no treats, no chow toys-bully sticks and beef cheeks) then started in with his kibble.

I'm not sure what "holistic" medicine is, but I had a foster with tapeworms, and one dose of conventional medicine, whatever they typically give for tapeworms, got rid of it in one day, and we didn't have any diarrhea. You need to be sure the tapeworms are killed and out of her system. Dewormers are fairly safe and rarely have any side-effects. I would stop the holistic medicine and go with a reliable treatment. Dehydration from the diarrhea, hunger and lack of nutrition, and prolonged tapeworm infection are much more harmful than one dose of tapeworm medicine.

No eggs and no dairy with diarrhea. Plain boiled chicken or very lean ground beef with white rice and pumpkin are all I would give. I hope she gets better soon.

OK we just went out and bought some chicken and pepto bismol.... one question..... how long do i boil the chicken for? We are vegetarian lol

the de-wormer is a herbal medicine. i know someone who used it - their dog had diarrhea once.... but Cooper has been sick for a couple of days

Kaytlin, please take him to the vet for a tapeworm pill. This herbal medcine clearly isn't having a good effect on him. The diarrhea isn't from the tapeworm, it's from the herbs.

I honestly don't know how long the chicken needs to boil; I never timed it. You want it to be cooked through, with no pink inside. You can also saute it; that might be faster. I cut it up in small pieces and just cook it it til it's white all the way through.

I second all that Karen has said about the chicken and medication.
i do at least 15 minutes, you can do a up to 20 minutes.
well, she hated the pepto bismol but gobbled up some chicken!

MY vet recommended Imodium 1/2 pill (every 8 hours) and the chicken, rice, diet when Daisy had diarrhea, it was gone in 1 day....that being said maybe it was on its way out anyway....you can never tell. Another vet said boiled burger and rice for our previous dog, this also always worked.

I agree with Karen, stop doing the holistic thing and get her in to the vet, 2 days and no improvement is not a good sign. The fact that she is eating and drinking is good.

Good Luck Kaytlin I hope she shows improvement today whatever you decide to do.

How is Cooper feeling today?  I agree with the others, Tapeworms is better managed through conventional medicine.  Hopefully you can get him into the vet asap:)
Yes, please let us know what the Vet says about Cooper.  We recently went through a similar episode of explosive diarrhea with Murph.  After a month on a few different meds, he's now doing better....I know how concerning this is.
