We brought Derby n/k/a "Hoosier" or "Hoo-dawg" (as Hubby has taken to calling him) home on Saturday. He's adorable and a really good boy and has already started bonding with my husband, me and our 3 kids (ages 10, 12 and 14). The only problem we're having is that he has these nasty eye boogers. They're chunky clumps of dried goop in the fur around his eyes. I can't get them out because he keeps jerking his head around every time I try to tackle them. He tries to "mouth" at me and doesn't want me messing with his eyes. They're dried on there pretty good. Any suggestions how to get them out and keep his eyes clean? Anyone else's doodle get yucky eye boogers?

We take a warm wash cloth to Gaston-Cramer's eyes first thing in the morning and late at night when he's tired. (otherwise, he too would want to mouth at the washcloth!LOL) It's just become part of his routine and keeps the "booger" at bay!
You'll love some of the answers others gave in a similar discussion a while back: http://doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/how-to-clean-dried-goobers

MY suggestion (you'll see it there) is still my favorite... =)
Okay...ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Thanks, Adina! I just read all the goober posts, and I'm thinking dinner ain't lookin' the same tonight...
You are MOST welcome...LOL! It works like a charm...I'm telling you...don't knock it till you've tried it a few times ;-)
hahaha, I too do this, and it works like a charm, plus, he never minds me picking at his eyes now that he knows he get a "treat" ;P
I tried to gently remove them-no way that was going to happen with our pup-We tried the warm facecloth but Thomas would just attack it. So I just pull it off with my nails-just like removing a bandage. It doesn't hurt them if you do it every morning (I hope). I just say"clean eyes" and he lets me do it. they are done in 3 seconds . It has become a routine that he is used to and he is only 18 weeks old. Your puppy is light in colour- so they show and we want them to look nice- hey women have to go thru eye brow plucking and or waxing. Being beautiful has its price. I have not let him eat it yet but after the comments I just read-I just might give it a try. LOL
When I brought Sadie home at 8 weeks, I was in a quandry about what to do with the eye stuff. I started letting her eat them. She actually waits for me to clean her eyes so that she can get her treat. I think to myself that it must be a salty treat and she never fights having her eyes cleaned so we both have a win-win situation...pretty dog with a salty treat.
Too funny - I don'tknow how I missed that original post. I started feeding them to my standard poodles 13 years ago when I was pregnant and on bed rest. One day I picked one and had no where to put it so I just offered it up....Now, 3 dogs later they look for the treat to come after the pick! They lick their own butts for goodness sake! I'm sure they'd eat the boogers themselves if they could get to 'em :))
