I heard somewhere that it depends upon what the female is. If that is so, then if the female is an F1, the puppies will be F2. If the female is F2, the puppies will be F3. I tried googling it and couldn't find this bit of information either.

I believe a generation only advances (numerically) beyond the lowest numbered generation. So even an F1 x F7 would still be F2. I don't think gender factors into it.
So my answer is that an F1 bred to an F2 would be an F2. However, all that would matter to me were the parents characteristics and the breeder's skills in picking a good puppy for me.
