Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all! I'm just curious if anyone has spent any time around Doodle mixes that aren't as popular on this site? I know there's plenty of great info here for Lab, Golden and Aussiedoodles, but we're considering looking at other options for our second dog. My DH says he can't handle another Labradoodle, he thinks Bernie is too unique and perfect, it wouldn't be fair to LD number two!

I want to stick with Doodles because of my allergies. But don't worry, I know no breed is a sure thing!

Anyhow, I appreciate your collective opinion!

I'm not a big fan of a lot of poodle mixes; some of them are pointless and downright silly, IMO.

But I did have a schnoodle (schnauzer and poodle) years ago...a friend's dog had puppies; and in many ways, she was the best dog I ever had. (Sorry JD)

Great size, sweet, great temperament, totally non=shedding and allergy friendly, and adorable. Of course, she was born and raised in a private home by very loving people. The parents were also not health tested, but I got lucky, and she was relatively healthy most of her life.

I have to ask, why not consider a purebred poodle? I also had two of those, and they were amazing dogs.

Very good question...my DH isn't quite ready for that either. Haha. We may end up being a single dog household because other than Bernie (between my allergies and his unfavorable opinion of dogs under 35 lbs) we can't seem to agree! We were actually looking at Wheaten Terriers when I decided to check out Labradoodle breeders in our area and stumbled across Bernie's photo. I emailed it to my DH at work and he replied in minutes saying "he's the one!" The pic below is the one we fell in love with =)

Amy the Schnoodles I have met were over 35 lbs.  Probably had standard or giant Schnauzer parent.

ever heard of a Whoodle (Wheaten Terrier/Standard poodle)?!  My parents neighbors have one!  She is the sweetest thing!

Karen,

I would like to second your opinion.  Poodles are amazing dogs, that is why doodles are so great, sorry, I'm very opinionated and have never owned a "retriever" to know the difference.  LOL!

Also, there are plenty of purebred poodles up for rescue and we are well aware just having adopted our new poodle boy..

At one year of age he is proving to be as terrific as I had hoped, already housebroken and quite well behaved.  He also learns new things very quickly.  Sorry, thought I had to add my "two cents worth".

I have met a few Schnoodles, and a few Cockapoos. Both are pretty nice breeds I think. I think you do need to be careful that you are buying from a responsible breeder when you venture into the doodle mix world though. Of course, you do with any dog mixed or purebred. But the "designer dog" fad has generated a lot of random mixes with bad breeders. Of course, you probably know this already. :-)

I second what Karen said. Why not a purebred Standard Poodle? Many people are put off by their traditional clips but of course you can let them grow out just like a doodle. They are amazingly smart, loyal, and active dogs. We are very seriously considering a Standard Poodle for our next dog...

My main concern with the 'other' less popular doodles is simply that there aren't necessarily established standards of breeding. By this I mean it is FAR more likely to run into puppy mills and backyard breeders and everything in between.  Far less likely to find a pup from fully health tested parents, for one.  I would recommend that if you find another --oodle breed you like that you research the non-poodle part of it and find out what health issues and health testing is recommended.  You can do this by looking up the parent club for the breed: 'Poodle Club of America' or 'West Highland Terrier club of America' etc... Research the pure breed sides and health testing recommended as well as common health issues BEFORE choosing a mix breeder.

I'm a cockapoo fan - grew up with one back when they were mutts :-)  I don't know much about other poodle mixes but I'd worry a little about getting one from a "breeder" who turned out to be a puppy mill.  I would want to meet the parent dogs because you don't want to end up with a poorly bred anything.

I understand not wanting to get another LD, you could never duplicate Bernie, but there are a lot of doodles who need rescuing.  Rescuing a wonderful dog would bring a whole new dynamic into your family - the new dog would have its own unique story that you would get to unravel.  Maybe your hubby would consider helping a doodle in need.

If allergies are a concern, it might be safer to stick with a purebred.  I have heard great things about Wheatons, standard poodles, and some of the terriers with less terrier personality.  My mom had a Westie before her gd's and she would love another Westie.

We've talked about fostering and adoption both! My DH likes that idea. Right now Bernie is too young, not quite ready to set a perfect example...and thanks for understanding the double LD issue, it seems so silly, but he really is different than any other we've met! We'll be moving again in a couple years and a fenced yard will be a must - plenty of space for multi-dog romping!
My Vet has a cockapoo who she brings to the office with her every day.  The dog has the run of the place...greets everyone as they come in the door.  He's one of the calmest, sweetest dogs I've ever met.  Even "crazy Murph" doesn't react to this dog.  He's made me a real fan of this breed too.
I have fostered a Schnoodle in the past and I have met several around my area.  They are all very sweet natured.
I've heard that too, thank you. My DH likes Schnauzers, oddly enough he has an affinity for dogs with beards =)
