Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi all! I'm just curious if anyone has spent any time around Doodle mixes that aren't as popular on this site? I know there's plenty of great info here for Lab, Golden and Aussiedoodles, but we're considering looking at other options for our second dog. My DH says he can't handle another Labradoodle, he thinks Bernie is too unique and perfect, it wouldn't be fair to LD number two!
I want to stick with Doodles because of my allergies. But don't worry, I know no breed is a sure thing!
Anyhow, I appreciate your collective opinion!

I'm not a big fan of a lot of poodle mixes; some of them are pointless and downright silly, IMO.
But I did have a schnoodle (schnauzer and poodle) years ago...a friend's dog had puppies; and in many ways, she was the best dog I ever had. (Sorry JD)
Great size, sweet, great temperament, totally non=shedding and allergy friendly, and adorable. Of course, she was born and raised in a private home by very loving people. The parents were also not health tested, but I got lucky, and she was relatively healthy most of her life.
I have to ask, why not consider a purebred poodle? I also had two of those, and they were amazing dogs.
Very good question...my DH isn't quite ready for that either. Haha. We may end up being a single dog household because other than Bernie (between my allergies and his unfavorable opinion of dogs under 35 lbs) we can't seem to agree! We were actually looking at Wheaten Terriers when I decided to check out Labradoodle breeders in our area and stumbled across Bernie's photo. I emailed it to my DH at work and he replied in minutes saying "he's the one!" The pic below is the one we fell in love with =)
ever heard of a Whoodle (Wheaten Terrier/Standard poodle)?! My parents neighbors have one! She is the sweetest thing!
Karen,
I would like to second your opinion. Poodles are amazing dogs, that is why doodles are so great, sorry, I'm very opinionated and have never owned a "retriever" to know the difference. LOL!
Also, there are plenty of purebred poodles up for rescue and we are well aware just having adopted our new poodle boy..
At one year of age he is proving to be as terrific as I had hoped, already housebroken and quite well behaved. He also learns new things very quickly. Sorry, thought I had to add my "two cents worth".
I have met a few Schnoodles, and a few Cockapoos. Both are pretty nice breeds I think. I think you do need to be careful that you are buying from a responsible breeder when you venture into the doodle mix world though. Of course, you do with any dog mixed or purebred. But the "designer dog" fad has generated a lot of random mixes with bad breeders. Of course, you probably know this already. :-)
I second what Karen said. Why not a purebred Standard Poodle? Many people are put off by their traditional clips but of course you can let them grow out just like a doodle. They are amazingly smart, loyal, and active dogs. We are very seriously considering a Standard Poodle for our next dog...
I'm a cockapoo fan - grew up with one back when they were mutts :-) I don't know much about other poodle mixes but I'd worry a little about getting one from a "breeder" who turned out to be a puppy mill. I would want to meet the parent dogs because you don't want to end up with a poorly bred anything.
I understand not wanting to get another LD, you could never duplicate Bernie, but there are a lot of doodles who need rescuing. Rescuing a wonderful dog would bring a whole new dynamic into your family - the new dog would have its own unique story that you would get to unravel. Maybe your hubby would consider helping a doodle in need.
If allergies are a concern, it might be safer to stick with a purebred. I have heard great things about Wheatons, standard poodles, and some of the terriers with less terrier personality. My mom had a Westie before her gd's and she would love another Westie.
