My puppy (well, 1 year old) adores frisbees. The problem is that her favorite ones are the cheap plastic ones and she can chew one of those up in no time (e.g. 30 minutes). What are some other frisbees that can withstand chewing and still be easy for the dog to catch?
I really love the Soft Bite frisbees. They don't bump his teeth when he jumps up to catch it, they are made of
a tough fabric. Also, in the house we play tug-of-war with this frisbee, and it is still holding up after about 6 months. You can get them at petsmart, etc...
Love, Love, LOVE our "Flippy Flopper" (it looks like the soft bite one above). It is soft enough to throw in the house, but I love the way it hovers and gives the dog time to catch. And I'm not afraid of it hurting them. We always have 2 or 3 laying around our house and yard. I buy mine at Walmart (it is only carried at some of them, so check walmart.com for availability) but I also just did a google search and found it here (same price) http://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30e070de-7b6a-11d5-a.... You can get different colors at Walmart. Have fun!
There's also the chuck-it flying squirrel (shaped differently but same purpose)
My Rosco will destroy any cloth-based toy...he tears at them. So if your dog doesn't tear at things (only bites) he should be okay. In any case I guess if you can get the toy BACK and throw it again before he has a chance to chew on it, you should be okay =)
Zogoflex makes a nearly indestrucrible and floatable frisbee. It is a little heavy for in the house play, but otherwise excellent. Zogoflex toys are sometimes available in large pet stores and are always available online at Smartpak.com.
Check this place out. This toy frisbee/feeder is a favorite among some trainers I know. The black ones are a little tougher than the colored ones! I love mine! I have the mini- chewb
Zogoflex is GREAT!! WestPaw is the manufacturer and they have a complete line of durable, floatable dog toys. Where I work we sell LOTS of the West Paw Zogoflex "frisbees" to lab owners because of their durability!
How old before a doodle can play frisbee without harm to their hips? I've bought two, both pink! ;) A dear friend told me recently to NOT let her play frisbee until she's older because it could harm her hips. Any thoughts?
I am slow to post here...sorry, and I hate to put a damper on the fun (I really am, I have seen how joyful dogs are when they play frisbee) but FYI whenever a dog leaps into the air and lands on back legs it is very damaging to hips. (This from my PennHip vet.) And if you have a genetic health warranty on your dog, if (s)he gets hip dysplasia and you have been playing frisbee with him/her, it could void the warranty. This is one "environmental" cause of hip dysplasia.
In answer to Kathy's post...it is probably never a good idea to play frisbee on a regular baisis...but at least wait until the dog's growth plates fill in (like the advice on jogging) at 18 months.
