I have a question.....are doodles know to be fence jumpers? I ask this as Maddy (our hound mix) in her prime would scale a fence like there was no tomorrow! She's WELL past that stage now due to age and we are about to fence in our property and are wondering just how high we need to go for a doodle. Now let me explain THIS doodle.....Gaston Cramer HATES stairs(he'll cling to the wall going down and up!), will not jump ON or OFF the bed(though loves to be in it! LOL) and has to be PRODDED to jump into the back seat of the car (but goes everywhere with me!LOL). Would it be safe to assume that I could just put up a normal slit rail fence, without any additional height to it like I had to do in our previous house with Maddy? Are doodles jumpers? Let me say too that I know with all that I am that Gaston-Cramer will not be our last doodle............that having been said I'm not having 5 dogs *LOL* but do want to plan for the future and do this fence height thing only once! LOL

So if your doodle can/does jump the fence I'd love to know it :)

Thanks :)

Yes!! I totally agree! I think that's why most of my dogs have no desire to attempt to scale the fence. Being a stud dog, my poodle sometimes feels the need to mark outside the fence and "check on things" lol. He won't leave the yard but will climb the fence at times, especially if the neighbors cat is in our yard. My females will cry if I close the bathroom door. They certainly have no desire to leave the fence, unless of course it's for a ride and they get to come. :o) Anyway, I don't think s/n house pets have the same urges to climb and jump. Of course there are ALWAYS exceptions.
We have a 6 foot board on board fence for our doodles. They have not tried to jump it, but have been known to charge it full speed if a good squirrel wags it's tail at them.
I really do not think there is an answer to this question. I think all dogs are different including our doodles. We had a temporary 4 ' fence up for Lucy the first winter and she never attempted to jump it. You talk to other owners and their doodles are jumpers. It is had to tell. So I say go with a 6 ' fence and be safe.
Doodles can definitely jump. I don't have a fence yet, but will go at least 4 to 5 feet when I do. My two take agility and some of the jumps in agility are at least 3.5 to 4 feet high. I have heard that the best way to curb fence jumping is to train the dog to jump the fence (with treats, etc.) and then never give them the jump command again where the fence is concerned. I'm not sure if this works as I have not tried it yet. However, I do know it works with baby gates and they are a lot shorter than the jumps in agility. Neither of mine have ever gone over this short little baby gate because I've never given them the jump command in association with the baby gate....and I never will. :)
Caeleach scales our 6ft fence, like it wasn't even there. I have to take her out, on a leash, and we have 2 fenced acres.

I am seriously thinking of putting a "hot wire", at the base of the fence about 12" off the ground, to keep her away from the fence. I know this sounds cruel, but her getting out of the yard and getting hit by a car, is even more cruel.

I hope she outgrows jumping the fence, but I don't have a lot of hope! LOL
