Well, we did it.  I took Harpo (and Groucho Too) for a walk at Ft. Ord yesterday with the dogs off leash.  We went Friday afternoon and only saw one walker on a road during our walk.  I selected a wide trail (dirt road that could be used for cars) and we walked about two miles.  Harpo was delighted to be off leash but stayed pretty close to me.  At one section of the trail, Groucho Too walked into a darkly shaded area and Harpo came running back to me with his tail tucked and looking over his shoulder.  I think he thought that Groucho Too was swallowed by a big black monster.  I told him that it was okay and he walked with me into the shade.  After that, it didn't seem to bother him.  He really is a little chicken.

How old are Groucho Too and Harpo?  I've often wondered.... how do you know when your doodle is ready to walk off leash?

Glad they enjoyed their freedom.  Envy you being able to take a walk without snow!  :-)  Your friends Dori & Rua

Groucho Too will be five next month and Harpo is seven months.  I think puppies are ready to take a walk off leash when they follow some commands and will come to you when you call them.  Harpo is just finishing his first obedience class, and it was kind of questionable if he was ready, but I took them to a place in the country with no distractions at a time nobody else was likely to be there.  This has been a beautiful weekend on the central coast (weather in the 70s) and everyone is over at the AT & T Pro Am golf tournament in Monterey.

No, Dori, definitely no snow here.  But it is expected to start raining again Monday afternoon.  What wonderful weather it has been the last couple of weeks!  Just perfect for getting out for a walk with the dogs.

Depends a lot on where you live also.  We are fortunate to have a lot of land around here and some of it with no leash restrictions.  We walked again today on another side of Ft. Ord (behind Toro housing) and the dogs were pretty good except they went down a creekbed and got lots of burrs in their coats.  Took a little grooming when we got home.
I would love to have Wilson off Leash  I just need to practice more   ! ! ! !  when we practice in the backyard he does very well, I just need to get him to the park again  Once the snow MELTS   YEEEK
Great Job Harpo....I am in the process of teaching Jack off leash walking but man the squirrels are my worst enemy.. He see's one and all bets are off...
