Every so often when I take Max out of his crate in the morning, I find a small patch of foam/drool on his crate bed. Nothing else is wet on him nor the crate, just a patch of foam. He acts like himself and doesn't appear ill. Can anyone tell me why and should I be concerned?
His food and water is picked up two hours before bed. Also, I've never seen him foam at the mouth but, he does drool a lot when he gets nauseas in the car before vomiting. I don't think the two are related but, I figure I'll throw that out there. :)
OMG is Max adorable!! What a sweetie pie!! In our last obedience session, one of the black labs had foam on her mouth. Someone said some thing to the owner, and she didn't seem to make any big deal about it. Maybe it is a lab thing! We were suppose to be listening so I didn't hear the explanation. Hopefully, someone else can fill you in.
Gunner does this too. Not sure what causes it, its on rare occassion. I have never seen him do it, I just see it on his bed in the morning once a month or so. Odd??
Exactly! Same here. I never see him foaming. The only thing I've ever seen him do is drool when car sick and I don't think the two are emotely related. I'm not too concerned but very curious.
My Lucy had a serious amount of foam on her mouth/beard and I (being the overprotective mama) rushed her to the vet. Where he very nicely, while surpressing a smile, informed me of the "danger" of toads in Oklahoma. ick. He clearly felt I needed some education and told me that although this wasn't Lucy's problem that dogs often "foam" when excited or stressed but that as long as it wasn't accompanied by any other symptoms (like lethargy) it's usually nothing to worry about.
So, based on that - is your little fella awake and waiting for you to come get him out of his crate?? Maybe he's just excited about starting his new day???
I would agree with excitement. Thule got super foamy mouthed at our first official Romp Around the World in 2007 -- she was having a blast, but was so foamy!
I also noticed Rosco had more drool/foam once when meeting a new puppy in a friend's backyard. He was sniffing and marking all over the place, racing around the yard exploring...and foaming.
Max is a super excited puppy but, he has never foamed during these times. He jumps, nips and humps - LOL. What a sight huh?
He goes into his crate at night with little effort, if any. He doesn't make a peep all night and when I go downstairs in the morning he patiently waits 'till I'm done with some morning prep stuff. So, it doesn't seem to be over excitment although, I'll admit he rather be out of the crate than in it.
I think because it's every so often it's probably nothing. He may have been hotter and 'sweating' more through his mouth. Or maybe he had been chewing on his paw or scratching an itch or cleaning himself and left a little wetness behind. Or maybe he 'urped' up a bit in the morning from having an empty stomach.
"Or maybe he 'urped' up a bit in the morning from having an empty stomach."
That is what I was thinking. I am a diabetic and every so often - I get this sudden urge to vomit in the middle of the night because I feel intense hunger. I always thought my blood sugar was dropping low at these times but, when I take a reading, It's in the normal range. For me it could be what is called a false hypo. Basically, my body has become accustomed to highs so, when it hits normal my body reacts as though it's a low because it is a low for me even though not dangerous.
I was curious if it could have been a drop in Max's blood sugar except - he doesn't show any other type of signs like lethargy. Since there are no other signs, I'll try and not over react. :D
I think it is like a GERD; Lizzie gets this too sometime in the morning. If she hasn't eaten in a long time and gets really hungry she will vomit some foam. Is it yellow? If so, then it is just bile from the GI tract. Try feeding him a cookie/biscuit before going into her crate at night to settle his tummy. As long as he's happy and eating and acting normal, I wouldn't worry about it.
