How often do you get your doodle groomed? What do you get at the groomer?
We got our doodle in June when he was 8 wks old. Took him to the groomer in August, they butchered him! Shaved him with like no hair, saying it was the longest they could go with the shaver. It grew back pretty quickly (of course). Well I took him again today, to a new place, asking them NOT to butcher him and make him look like a poodle--picked him up, and thats exactly what they did! He doesnt look the same at all. I know that in a matter of 2 weeks, it will grow out and look good. It was just sooo long and getting matted so easily. The place I went to today saw how disappointed I was and said next time if I bring him when its not soo long, they could possibly do a "sisscor cut" (which of course is like $80!).
Bailey's coat is wavy--not too curly and not super straight. That picture I have posted is from back in July---I should post some more recent ones......
Hi Shari, you might want to search the forum archives for words like "Mat" and "matting" and "mats" -- we've had lots of past discussions on this you'll find helpful. Just click the tab labeled "Forum" at the top of any page and then use the search box to search. Also check out our Doodle Grooming group for more indepth grooming discussions! Hope that helps!
Adina...the website guidelines you posted for doodle grooming are great! I will make sure to print off the fill out this form whenever I get Hollywood groomed to prevent mishaps like last week! Thanks again!
I take Iris to Petco about every 2-3 months. They use a 6 or 7 blade, which I know is short, but, it gets hot, here in MO
in summer. They also do shave close the top of her nose because her hair is so crazy curly near her eyes and gets irritated, with drainage. In winter, they do use a longer length clipper. Her hair grows so fast, that I never am really disappointed, now that I got them to give up all the poodle poms. I have them clip her tail about every year, then let it grow wild the rest of the time. Even with this crazy cut style, most folks still mistake her for a poodle.
We now have a GD puppy who will be 16 weeks old tomorrow and I am thinking it is time for a good brushing and trim-but I DO NOT want him to lose his cute puppy look. Until October 15th, we had a soft coated wheaton terrior and belive me they look al ot like a medium doodle. We had terrible experiences with groomers when he was little. One of them shaved him practically bald even on his legs. She even yelled at me when I picked him up because he had been swimming at our cottage the weekend before and was slightly matted. She did not believe in the dog swimming thing. He looked so awful when he came home- he huffed at me for two days! I finally found a great groomer-a mother and daugther team and they gave him what they call the "puppy cut" He was groomed 1 week before he passed away at almost 12 years old and he still looked like a puppy. I will take Thomas our new GD there next week. What they do is a bath, then a blow dry, then they cut him and follow the lines of his hair now without going too short. I paid 45.00 (Canadian) for Buddy, our Wheaton and expect to pay the same for Thomas. Trust me-we tried 5 or 6 groomers before we found one that was caring and considerate. That is important too! Some of them are really bad and when you think you left your dog with them for hours-it makes me feel sick. I took Buddy to this one guy who worked alone in a little storefront place near our house here in Toronto. When I went back to get him 2 hrs later there was a note on the door saying that one of the dogs had bitten him in the nose and that he had to go to emergency. He locked my dog in there and was gone. I called my husband and he drove over and we waited and called two local hospitals on our cell. Finally, 3 hrs later, he showed up!! We were SO upset. I felt sorry for the guy but this was ridiculous. Anyway-talk to the groomer and ask about the "puppy cut"-take the picture you have posted of Bailey with you so they can see the look that you want. He is really adorable. Hope this helps. I may be new to this site but I have had experience with "bad" haircuts.(including my own hair LOL)
