I've heard of this before....it may be the noise it makes when it moves or that she can see a reflection.

I had a golden that refused to use the shiny stainless dish.  We believed that she could see herself in the bowl.  We went to a ceramic dish and she was fine.

Our doodle was very hesitant to use the stainless dishes at first.....she got used to them.

Your post made me laugh out loud! I think they are all a little "nuts" sometimes! There have been other discussions about dogs refusing to eat or drink out of particular dog bowls. My Goldens refused to drink out of the ceramic dish I got for them because I was afraid the metal one would be too hot in the summer. Go figure???

One of my fosters was afraid of the metal dishes.  Not afraid, but just had an aversion to them.  Think about it: the taste of stainless steel ( yuck), could be hurting a tooth like chewing on foil.   Could be a number of things.  The dog is not nuts.  Just like people, we all have our quirks.  I hate the wooden handle on knives, Popsicle sticks, cooking with wooden spoons--I just can't stand the feeling.

Are you going to get the Doodle another bowl?  Hope so.  I know that the metal bowls are more sanitary than plastic, but if it bothers the dog, just go to ceramic.

i have heard of this before. switch to ceramic (not plastic)

If may be the reflections, not just of herself, but of lights in the room or other objects. Sometimes, their tags htting against a metal bowl make an unpleasant loud noise, too.

Ollie likes his small stainless steal ones, but I bought him a bigger one and its a problem lol I think he can see himself. He doesn't act scared...he just paws at it until it flips over or until all the water is on the floor.

Aren't all DOODLES nuts?

I think it's any light shining on it freaks them out.

I do!  Well, not me personally, but my Wilson will not eat from a metal bowl.  I am not even sure how I discovered it.  Originally I thought it was the collar banging on the dish, so I removed his collar for feedings.  That didn't help.  So then I thought he saw his reflection in the bowl, so I switched to a glass dish.  That didn't help.  So I broke it down.......he would eat his raw meal in the AM from a metal bowl, but not his kibble.  At first I thought he didn't like his kibble, so I started anything and everything to it so he would eat.  That worked!  He never did well skipping meals as he would throw up bile from an empty belly, so he had to eat two meals.

Then I switched his kibble.  The first couple of days he ate it directly out of the metal bowl.  I thought "it was the food all along!"  Then he stopped eating it.  And I realized plain kibble made noises in the bowl and THAT is what he didn't like!

Because he was now really 'scared' of the metal bowl and the banging, I changed his morning dish (for raw) to a glass pie plate.  For his kibble, he has to eat it directly off of his mat.  Strangely enough the water dish is a metal bowl and he is 'okay' with it, but he does have to sneak up on it.  Crazy doodle!
