Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone! I just took Chloe for her first vet visit and am a little worried about her having doodle in her. The vet thought she was a pure bred Golden Retriever and said she had never seen a Goldendoodle puppy with such straight hair. I'm wondering if anyone else with an F1 doodle had the same issue. I know there is a chance with an F1 for them to have dominant Golden traits, but just want to make sure I'm not alone. I love her dearly and would never return her if there was a mistake made at the breeder, but there was a littler of Golden Retrievers born 2 weeks before Chloe. The picture is of her cuddling with my roommates 2 year old Golden Retriever. Please let me know if anyone else went through the same problem

Marieka,  there's a good chance your pup may look very retrieverish as an adult.  We have a group for that:  http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/wheresthepoodleinmydoodle  --  With any mixed breed there's always a percentage that will look a lot like one of the parent breeds.  Did you make any specific requests of your breeder as to what type of coat/hair you wanted in your pup?  It is disappointing to not get what you expected, but in the end all that matters is you love her.

I agree with Adina. Think about the people you know; I'm sure you know someone who looks almost exactly like their mother or their father, with no traces of the other parent. But of course we know that the other parent played a role in creating them, lol.

It's not at all unusual for a first generation doodle to be very retrieverish in appearance. That's the chance you take with a mixed breed dog, they may take after one or the other parent or they may be a combination of both, just like humans.

The only thing that I would consider a "problem" is that you mentioned on your page that you chose a doodle because they are hypoallergenic and won't shed. Unfortunately, that is often not the case, and especially when the dog does have the straighter more retrieverish coat. The chances are very high that Chloe will shed, possibly heavily. My guy also has a straighter coat, and i have to tell you that he sheds as much as any purebred retriever. Hopefully this will not really be a problem for you.

PS: If you really want to find out if there is any poodle in Chloe, there are all kinds of DNA tests you can order on line fairly inexpensively.

Do you have a picture of the puppy's face?  As Adina said - all that matters is that you love her.  When I got Annie - although she is a labradoodle and not a goldendoodle, she looked just like a lab puppy - and had only a few wispy hairs.  I see from your profile that Chloe is about 12 weeks old.  This was annie at 11 weeks and  again at 8 months:

The first generation's can be unpredictable in their appearance from what I've seen - I'm no expert.. but there are others here that have seen LOTS of doodles - if you have a better picture of the pups face, others might be able to chime in.  They have much less hair when they are younger - it grows in over time....

Oh, and Annie does have the straight shaggy hair - and she does shed.  Not nearly as bad as other dogs I've had in the past, but she is NOT hypoallergenic and non-shed!

If you can get some photos of her face, that might help us take better guesses.

Oh man, I fell in love with my Daisy when she was just 4 weeks, smooth coat, no curl, then when we visited at 6 weeks, too late already in love, smooth coat no curl. Brought her home at 9 weeks....still just a little wave. Now Daisy, an F1b is totally curly and poodle like. You just never know. I do have to say though I have met plenty of F1's that are mostly straight with curly spots that shed and some that are wavy and don't. It's a gamble but well worth the roll of the dice!

I had to go look at your pics, and with this curly face I would have guessed a curly coated adult:

Baby Daisy

Aw, there is my little poopy puppy! - she does look curly on the face but her body, especially the white part was totally straight. The white part is still silky and straight in fact.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else--your vet must have limited experience with doodles----they can start out straight and end up curly or very shaggy--it takes time to see what they will ultimately look like--there are some who look just like retrievers--but I wouldn't say Chloe is going to be one of them....

Did you breeder have any previous litters with these parents? If so, how did the puppies look?

When we got our second doodle, Auggie, I was a bit disappointed about the straight hair. But he is "doodling up" nicely, although he will never be as curly as our fist doodle.

Here is Auggie's transformation. You just need to wait and see what happens.

Enjoy this darling puppy that you have fallen in love with! hugs to both of you!

As everyone has said, there are no guarantees when it comes to the coat of an F1, be it a goldendoodle or a labradoodle.  My boy is a F1 labradoodle with a short shedding coat, but I knew when I adopted him that his coat was not a full doodle type coat.  He does have facial hair, is a very sweet doodle and I am thrilled that he is mine or maybe I should say that I am his!
