I have been reading up on natural remedies for Hattie's little incontinence problem. A few of the articles I have read suggest that a grain free diet has been the miracle cure for many dogs with incontinence. I currently have been giving her Blue Buffalo and have mixed a bag or grain free and with a grain bag together, but went out and bought another bag of grain free to try by itself. I have also read about parsely chopped up on their food and giving them milk. Has anyone read or know about thses possibilities as a natural remedy?

Sandy was the cause of the Hattie's incontinence ever determined? If I remember correctly it may have had something to do with her early spay? If it was a botched early spay in may take a surgical repair to correct. I'm not sure that anything else would help.  If it is a hormone imbalance or deficiency there may be natural remedies that could be beneficial. I am not familiar with any of those that you mentioned though. It would help to know more about the cause before a  correct remedy could be determined.

If you are interested in a natural treatment it would probably be a good idea to make an appointment with a holistic vet or one who is trained in natural treatments. They would be the best ones to give advice in this area and since Hattie is so young it would be good to get on it now before the issue possibly worsens.

Sandy, here is a listing of Holistic vets in TX. I don't know if any of these are near you though...

Okay, it just went back to the search page. So select TEXAS in step one of the  Advanced Search area and then hit the submit button at the bottom.

This is an interesting thought and worth a try. There might be a connection if there was some type of food allergy I guess, but since it's a pretty easy and harmless experiment, I'd try it. Let us know?  Grain free has fixed a lot of problems, parsley is good for their breath and I think digestion, and I have no clue what the milk would do, but mine get yogurt or cottage cheese all the time and love it.

Sedona had a bit of an incontinence problem as a puppy. We called it her "I'm excited" pee. It was quite bad as a baby, but got progressively better as she got older. Now, at two, it's pretty much gone. Is this what you're seeing with Hattie?

Sandy you might check out this product:

I have used Herb Pharm products frequently and they are high quality. I have one of the company's manuals and they claim "this product helps to restore the natural elasticity to flaccid tissue of the urinary bladder, urethra and ureter. Favorably augments neurological innervation to over-relaxed urinary sphincters and thereby helps restore their natural tone". This is not info you will find on line as it is against the law to make claims of health benefits for certain/most natural products. Calm Waters contains corn silk among other ingredients. I do not believe that any of the ingredients are contraindicated for dogs but you should double check each ingredient for safety if you decide to try it.

Sure! And Herb Pharm also offers Corn Silk as a single herb tincture as well if you just want to try it alone. I like that their products are organically grown.

Trudie is only 5 and I have had her for 3 yrs in Sept.  All of a sudden, she began to really pee while asleep (during the day mostly) and yet, so far not every day but it is getting more frequent.  The vet gave us a prescription to try (Proin).  It is a chewable but she hates the taste.  Trudie is now restricted as to where she can go in the house in case of accidents.  I should also say that Trudie is on the OS food because of urinary stones.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mary, my 11 1/2 yr old mini schnauzer has the same problem. Our vet prescribed Incurin. It's a very small tablet. Lucy only gets a half, so it's super easy to hide in a bite of some kind of treat. We are down to 1/2 tablet every third day with no accidents. You might ask your vet about it as an alternative, if the incontinence is still an issue.

By any chance have you tried the corn silk?  If so,  do you buy this over the counter or at the pet store????

I contacted the Herb Pharm co. and they said their products are only for HUMANS.

Our vet did check on the Incurin and said the only issue she could find was handling because it is a hormone.

OMGosh!  I just checked the Paul Newman treats and they have barley and oats. What kind of treats can I give her?

I took another  look at the ingredients of Trudie's SO food and there are no grains.  I do give her a spoonful of pumpkin at each feeding to help with her bowels.

I don't give her dairy products because dairy and high protein can add to the bladder stone problem.

I haven't tried corn silk. Lucy (my schnauzer) hasn't ever been on a grain free food and although I'm home cooking for her now, she still eats grains (as she has kidney issues and can't have higher amounts of protein). The Incurin works like a charm for her. Vet never said anything about handling it. I checked package insert and it said women of child bearing age and those breastfeeding should wash hands after handling. Neither of those applies to me. ;)
